“Aquaman 2: Lost Kingdom” is currently still in theaters, but otherwise the old DC Extended Universe (DCEU) is history. A new chapter opens, with many new actors: the DC Universe, DCU for short. In this new major attack on Marvel’s competition, James Gunn and Peter Safran have their hats on – and have already presented a far-reaching plan for what films and series await us in the coming years.
This year marks the start of the DCU. The ‘Creature Commandos’ animated series will be released in 2024, before ‘Superman: Legacy’, the first DCU film, opens on July 10, 2025. And if you’re not necessarily interested in animated comic adaptations, but don’t want to miss the live-action productions later, I can tell you this: Creature Commandos will also play a role in live-action – as some of the stars who lend their voices to the characters in the animated series will later reprise their roles in live-action films and live-action series in the DCU.
Most of the voice actors for “Creature Commandos” have been locked in for a while. But now James still has Gunn another personality confirmedwhich so far has only been speculated about: Anya Chalotrafeatured in the Netflix fantasy series “The witcherYennefer van Vengerberg will appear in Creature Commandos as Circe, a villain from the Wonder Woman comics.
She joins an illustrious cast that is generating curiosity not only about the animated series, but also about the stars’ possible future appearances in live-action projects. Includes David Harbor (“Stranger Things”) as Frankenstein, Frank Grillo (“Copshop”) as Rick Flag Sr. (father of Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) from the “Suicide Squad” films), Indira Varma (“Game Of Thrones”) as The Bride, Alan Tudyk (“Firefly”) as Dr. Phosphorus, Sean Gunn (“Guardians Of The Galaxy”) as Weasel AND as GI Robot, Maria Bakalova (“The Bubble”) as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Zoe Chao (“Senior Year”) as Nina Mazursky, Steve Agee (“The Suicide Squad”) as John Economos and Viola Davis in her well-known DC role as Amanda Waller.
“Creature Commandos.” The mavericks of the DCU
Most of the characters sound quite dark or even evil? The fact that these are not exactly the brilliant heroes from the DC universe is also evident from the connection with the ‘Suicide Squad’ films, which ultimately feature all kinds of strange loners and anti-heroes as weird weasels. And actually, ‘Creature Commandos’ is also a rather unconventional group of super beings.
As is known, strange cartoon characters are very popular with James Gunn, who not only directed ‘The Suicide Squad’ for DC, but also the super successful ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ adventures for Marvel. Whether the appearance of Wonder Woman antagonist Circe means we’ll actually see Wonder Woman again in the new DCU at a later date remains to be seen – but it’s very likely. It’s also not entirely clear if Circe will be part of the team in “Creature Commandos” or if she will be the actual villain of the series.
