Ralf Schumacher (47) has been running Hotel Villa Coloniale, located just a few kilometers outside South Africa’s capital Cape Town, since 2020. Along with a beautiful park and a restaurant serving gourmet cuisine, the luxury hotel offers rooms for up to 300 francs per night. Schumacher said in an interview with Bild that he came to the hotel by chance: “An acquaintance of mine who owns property here gave me and a few friends permission to use the hotel for a few days. I liked it so much that I said to him, ‘Let me know if you sell it.'”

At some point it was time. The racing driver became a hotelier. The former Formula 1 professional speaks proudly of his Villa Coloniale: “The house is just over 100 years old and was part of a larger farmland that I bought from a 72-year-old man. His grandfather already owned the land.”

Two neighbors don’t want to talk

Now the ex-husband of bush camper Cora Schumacher (47) wants 13 noble villas to be built around his hotel. To do this, Schumacher purchased several plots of land around Villa Coloniale. A move that the neighbors did not like at all. Shortly after planning began in March 2022, the construction project takes up space for leisure activities such as sports and walking paths, and Schumacher’s project also makes the residential area very dense.

He has now been able to convince some of the critics, but not all: “There are now only two neighbors who are not willing to talk. Everyone around here sold me their properties and they have no problem with it.” The Municipality of Constantia is now also behind Schumacher’s project because they really want to have new homes, Schumacher says and is confident: “We will find a solution. I think we can start in the next few years.”
