We could actually have imagined it. “Star Wars” movies come in packs of three – if, like “Solo” or “Rogue One,” they don’t have the “A Star Wars Story” addition that points out their uniqueness. The newly announced “The Mandalorian & Grogu” from director Jon Favreau (“Iron Man”) is expected to result in two more installments – that is, if it is successful. After all, we’ve known about it for a long time.
The information comes from , which point to a source close to Lucasfilm. So it’s just a rumor for now, but one with a lot of credibility. Because reported long ago that the fourth season of “The Mandalorian” would be replaced by a movie. This is exactly what happened with The Mandalorian & Grogu. The information so far was already accurate. And the old statements about a movie and the new statements about a trilogy would come from the same source.
“The Mandalorian & Grogu”: Start of the Thrawn Trilogy?
The rumor also sounds credible for another reason. Some time ago, Lucasfilm announced a ‘Star Wars’ movie about the Mandalorian Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal). In this film by series creator Dave Filoni, all the events from “The Mandalorian”, “Ahsoka” and Co. should culminate – probably in a big confrontation with villain Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen). It has already been confirmed that Favreau’s project will not replace Filoni’s film, but will complement it.
So we already have the two edge parts of the trilogy, all we need is a middle part. Creates a small warning still.
Only a trilogy if it is successful?
The insiders assume that Lucasfilm has deliberately not announced a trilogy yet to protect itself against possible failures at the box office. The calculation is as follows:
- “The Mandalorian & Grogu” is successful at the box officethere will also be a second film before Filoni’s big Mandoverse crossover concludes the trilogy.
- “The Mandalorian & Grogu” disappoints at the box office The story will first be continued on Disney+ with cheaper series seasons before Filoni’s big Mandoverse crossover returns to theaters.
We’ll have to be patient anyway. Although filming for “The Mandalorian & Grogu” is scheduled to begin in spring 2024, it is currently assumed that the May 21, 2026 theatrical release date scheduled for the next “Star Wars” film will be used. But it’s not official yet. Who knows: Maybe after the movie is announced, we’ll be surprised by announcing an earlier date.
