Subzero temperatures make us shiver. To better cope with the cold, many people turn to bedding bottles, heated blankets or cherry pit pillows. There’s a good reason for this: Heat dilates our blood vessels, leading to better blood circulation. This has a calming effect on our nervous system. At the same time, the warmth on our skin helps our brain distract from possible physical complaints (for example, muscle or joint pain). On the contrary, this also means that the cold causes stress on our body.
Therefore, both bed bottles and cherry pit or grain pillows promise long-lasting warmth and a relaxing effect. So what are the differences between these products? So what should you pay attention to when using them? Aresa Messerli (25), a pharmacist at the Bälliz pharmacy and pharmacy in Thun BE, gives information.
Messerli says the classic bed bottle is the most popular. “They keep you warmer longer than cherry pit or grain pillows because they retain heat better.” However, bed bottles should not be filled with boiling hot water directly from the kettle, otherwise too much water vapor may form in the bottle. “This will damage the bottle.”
It is also important that the hot water bottle be used in a fabric cover or cloth. “Otherwise you run the risk of burning your skin,” says Messerli. However, if you use the bed bottle correctly, there is no risk of burns or skin damage.
Cherry stone or grain pillows are a popular and often more sustainable alternative, according to Messerli. These consist mostly of natural materials. To heat them, you can heat them in the microwave for a few minutes or in the oven for ten minutes at about 60 to 150 degrees, depending on the manufacturer’s instructions. Caution: Since these are natural materials, you run the risk of fire if you exceed time or temperature specifications when heating.
Pillows with smaller grains, especially millet or grapeseed, are more flexible than mattress pads and can therefore also be used on the knees, joints or neck.
“Cherry stone pillows are also popular for muscle or menstrual issues,” says Messerli. Since cherry pits are larger, the corresponding pillows have a coarser structure and are heavier than the grained pillows. If you place such a pillow on your belly, it will provide warmth and apply slight pressure. “This combination is especially good for complaints,” says Messerli.
Cherry stone or grain pillows are just as warm as bed bottles, according to Messerli. They usually lose heat a little faster. Ultimately, which product you choose is an individual question, says Messerli.
