The ‘Avatar’ franchise still has a long run in theaters – Part 5 is currently scheduled for release in December 2031. And who knows, maybe there will be more sequels or TV series to come. But first, ‘Avatar 3’ is in the starting blocks for the public, which starts on December 17, 2025. And the team around mastermind James Cameron is already one step further: work on ‘Avatar 4’ is already in sight, while at the same time post-production of part 3 is still being completed.
Lead actor Sam Worthington and his colleagues are almost constantly filming and promoting the blockbusters. Opposite Worthington has now explained that the actors will return to the set of the ‘Avatar’ series in February: “We’re going back to work in a month and it’s big. It’s bigger than you can imagine.”
Shooting for “Avatar 3” or “Avatar 4”?
However, the star did not specify exactly what part the cast will be in front of the camera for. Of course, it would be clear that filming is underway for “Avatar 4” – after all, the main filming of “Avatar 3” has already been completed. But there is the oddity of the time jump within “Avatar 4”, which in turn casts doubt on the fact that this part is currently being worked on…
Because in the middle of ‘Avatar 4’ there is a six-year jump. To take advantage of the natural aging process of the young actors, the scenes before this time jump were already filmed during the production of ‘Avatar 3’. Now they’re letting time take its course — and Cameron explained that they won’t shoot the remaining scenes of “Avatar 4” until after the theatrical release of “Avatar 3.” Then the young stars around Britain became Dalton, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss and Co. correspondingly older. But that won’t be until 2026…
So what exactly will the “Avatar” stars be filming starting in February 2024? On the one hand it is the possibility that work on part 4 will continue, but that only scenes with the adults will be filmed – or possibly with the “younger” children, if the look still fits. However, it would also fit within the time frame in which “Avatar 3” is currently filming and scenes are being dubbed. – a common procedure, especially in CGI-heavy productions.
In any case, we could expect new set photos and perhaps more details about the future of the ‘Avatar’ series from February. “Avatar 3” will hit theaters on December 17, 2025. “Avatar 4” will be released on December 19, 2029, and “Avatar 5” will conclude the pentalogy on December 17, 2031.
