The New Year has already begun, the Christmas tree stands sadly in the corner of the room. Once you have completely removed all decorations from the tree (otherwise it cannot be composted), it is time to say goodbye to the tree. Probably the most common method: Dragging the tree down the stairwell and then dropping it off at the waste disposal company. You’ll definitely hit your daily goal on the pedometer with this method – especially since you’ll have to wipe the needles from the stairwell. But if you’re smart, it doesn’t have to be that way.

A well-watered tree stays fresh and green longer. A dry tree quickly sheds its needles and you are left with hairy gifts. With a little forethought, you can at least stop the rain of needles.

Let’s say you forgot to water it because of the Christmas rush. Don’t worry, this can happen to even the nicest people. You’re not stuck sweeping needles with a trash bag and some skill. First you roll a large garbage bag from the inside to the outside, then you place the tree inside. Then carefully roll the garbage bag over the branches. Voilà – the Christmas tree has been tamed.

This trick is a continuation of the previous one and is especially suitable for large trees. This involves wrapping an old sheet or tablecloth around the tree. A tarp can also work, but thin fabric wraps around the fabric much better. No needle can escape from this straitjacket.

Swedes are celebrating farewell to their Christmas trees in style. On St. Knut’s Day, the last edible decorations on the tree are enjoyed with pleasure before the tree flies out the window in a high arc. If you do not want to take risks, you can lower the tree slowly using a rope.

This method involves the smallest needle spread, provided that there is a comfortable fireplace. Unfortunately the fir green smokes quite heavily. If you do not want to send your New Year’s greetings in the form of smoke signals, it is better to remove them before burning.

Those who have a lucky garden or a larger balcony can use branches to protect their wintering plants from the cold. Leftovers in the spring can be safely composted. (chj)
