Certainly, “2 Guns” is not a masterpiece. The film has some minor to moderate script weaknesses. The best way to find out what these are is in the sFILMSTARTS review, which ultimately gave it a solid three stars. When it comes to action, there is only one motto: excess is the principle. The shootouts are shot razor-sharp and the one-liners come across as wonderfully politically incorrect. Superstars Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg seem to have had a great time with this. You can test whether you also feel the same way in front of the screen later in the evening.
“2 Guns” airs today, December 28, 2023 at 10:25 PM on ZDFneo. A repeat will be shown the same evening at 2:10 am. Alternatively, you can watch the film in the ZDFmediathek for a few weeks after the first broadcast. However, due to the FSK 16 approval, this is only possible from 10 p.m. – unless you register there and confirm that you are of sufficient age.
The thriller is currently also available on regular subscriptions from Netflix and WOW (formerly Sky Ticket)* contain. And of course it is also available as Blu-ray, DVD or paid video-on-demand:
In addition to Washington, who was in theaters in the summer of 2023 with ‘The Equalizer 3’, and ‘Transformers’ and ‘Departed’ star Wahlberg, other well-known actors await you in ‘2 Guns’. “X-Men” superhero James Marsden, Bill Paxton (“Aliens,” “Twister”) and Paula Patton of “Mission: Impossible – Phantom Protocol” were in front of the camera.
There were also some real Hollywood veterans in attendance, including Edward James Olmos (“Miami Vice”), Robert John Burke (“Tombstone,” “Cop Land”) and Fred Ward (“The Stuff Heroes Are Made of”), who each of us has probably played some role.
“2 Guns” on ZDFneo: that’s the story
Bobby Trench (Washington) is a highly intelligent agent for the US anti-drug agency DEA, while Michael Stigman (Wahlberg), who works for Naval Intelligence, is more of a shirtless type. Independently, they went undercover to infiltrate a Mexican drug cartel. Both investigators are unaware of each other’s true identities and believe each other to be criminals. That is why they do not dare to cross the path at first.
When their attempt to arrest drug lord Papi Greco (Olmos) fails, they have to improvise. It states that they harm Papi, at least to the extent that they help him out of a few million in a bank robbery. Almost surprisingly, the coup goes off without any problems and the amount stolen turns out to be many times higher than hoped. Due to this circumstance, they now have not only the gang boss and his captors on their heels, but also the employers of Stigman’s Navy around the unscrupulous Quince (Marsden), who also want to secure the money…
“2 Guns” has a comedic character – and for good reason!
The apparently violent violence in the film by director Baltasar Kormákur (“Everest”, “101 Reykjavík”) has an almost comic character. This impression does not arise by chance, but is entirely intended by the production. “2 Guns” is based on the graphic novel of the same name by artist and author Mike Zeck Steven Grant. Both men had previously written and illustrated the far from prudish Marvel comic series ‘The Punisher’ for years.
If you like badass action, buddy cop energy and visuals more than a deep story, “2 Guns” is a good choice. Admirers of the two superstars will also have a lot of fun here. Both men are given plenty of space to show their individual charm and charisma. The contrast between the different approaches to acting is what makes it so special.
