“Maestro” has been available on Netflix since December 20 – and you’d think the biopic directed by Bradley Cooper and starring himself as composer legend Leonard Bernstein would cause a stir. After all, “Maestro” major Oscar candidate for the streaming service and is expected to compete in numerous major categories at the upcoming awards ceremony in spring 2024 (and has a good chance of some nominations, too). On the summary collection page In fact, it is the best-rated Netflix movie of 2023.
But Today, Netflix released its official stats for the past week – and “Maestro” is completely missing from them. Despite a near-global reboot, “Maestro” didn’t even crack the streaming service’s top 10 most-watched films. For example, the more than 15-year-old action film ‘The Marine’, which is available in considerably fewer countries, was viewed more often. Because it closes the official Netflix top 10 of English-language films with five million views. By the way, the list is headed by “Rebel Moon – Part 1: Child of Fire”. You can find a ranking of the numbers for Zack Snyder’s sci-fi epic here:
We dug a little deeper and it seems that for the most part, “Maestro” pretty much flies under the radar worldwide. According to the website that monitors each country’s Netflix charts As of yesterday, December 26, just a week after its release, the biopic was only in the top 10 in one country (ranked 8th in Israel).
“Maestro” has never ranked first in any single country since its launch. The highest feeling was a 2nd place in Canada, but after one day we dropped to tenth place and then straight out of the top 10. In Germany the film only stayed in ninth place for two days. This is an absolute rarity for such a high-profile start.
Now you can of course speculate a lot about the reasons. “Maestro” was shown in cinemas for two weeks in advance. Of course, some people curious about “A Star Is Born” director Bradley Cooper’s new work also jumped at the chance to see Bernstein’s biopic on the big screen. How much is not known. Netflix doesn’t publish box office figures, so it’s not documented how many tickets were sold or how many dollars were spent. However, the theatrical release certainly doesn’t explain the lack of interest in the streaming release thus far. It was much too small for that.
Maybe people felt like eating lighter food around Christmas? Two different film adaptations of “The Grinch” eventually made it into the top 10. Maybe “Maestro” is being discovered bit by bit? At the latest if the Oscar predictions currently making the rounds come true and there are nominations for the likes of lead actor Bradley Cooper and lead actress Carey Mulligan, there will probably be a few more people wanting to catch up on the film.
