Christopher Landon has now revealed via the short message service X, long known as Twitter, that he will no longer be directing “Scream 7.” He left “Scream 7” “weeks ago.” He does not give exact details of the circumstances, but those in the know can glean the reasons from his words. Landon, known for the horror films ‘Happy DeathDay’ and ‘Freaky’, writes:
“It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And it broke my heart for everyone involved. All. But it’s time to move on. I have nothing more to say than the hope that is Wes’ legacy [Anm.: „Scream“-Regisseur Wes Craven] thrives and rises above the noise of a divided world. What him and Kevin [Anm.: Kevin Williamson, Original-Drehbuchautor und Miterfinder des Franchise] “What they created is something amazing, and it was an honor to spend even the briefest moment in the splendor of their work.”
Christopher Landon: Apparently unhappy about the loss of actresses.
With these words, Landon’s departure should be a clear response to the loss of both leading actresses. At first it was known that production company Spyglass leading actress Melissa Barrera dismissed, after she made statements on social media that those responsible labeled as anti-Semitic. Landon immediately made it clear that he was unhappy with this decision, but immediately deleted a corresponding message. The fact that he uses the same vocabulary now as he did then makes it clear that he is referring to this decision. The fact that he repeats the word “all” is probably intended to emphasize that he also includes Barrera here.
Straight away After Barrera’s dismissal, her film sister also left Jenna Ortega the franchise. It quickly became clear that it was not a solidarity action, but that the busy schedule did not allow the “Wednesday” star to return. Shortly afterwards, reports circulated that Ortega was demanding more money and could not agree on a new contract with the person responsible for Spyglass. But these justifications can certainly be questioned.
“Scream 7”: future uncertain?
Actually, ‘Scream 7’ would be about the Carpenter siblings again. The film would be released together with “Scream 5” And “Scream 6would even form its own trilogy within the entire franchise. Landon started his self-described “dream job” under these circumstances – and must now have watched in horror as everything fell apart as the two main characters for the planned story suddenly ran out of actresses.
Either way, those behind the series are now faced with a bigger problem. How and even whether it can be done with “Scream 7“continuation is open. It still seems impossible that such a profitable franchise would go under, but we may have to break new ground again with some kind of mini-reboot.
