Know your own limits: How many glasses of wine are there at Christmas?

The decorated Christmas tree is stunning, the candles are flickering and the kitchen is wafting a wonderful scent. Today and tomorrow, like every year, people from all over the world will come together to celebrate Christmas. One of the indispensable parts of these celebrations is eating with your loved ones.

And this year too, lots of wine corks will be unearthed for Christmas. It traditionally starts with an aperitif, accompanied by wine, where sparkling wine is served with quality appetizers, and toasts are also celebrated for the first time. So how many glasses of wine are actually in the entire meal?

Know your own limits

After the appetizer, one usually moves on to light salads or delicacies such as foie gras and smoked salmon. Sparkling wine is replaced by white wine, followed by red wine, and the dessert is traditionally finished with some dessert wine, port or cognac. This means one or two glasses combined throughout the entire meal.

On average, we’re expecting around half a 0.75-litre bottle per person at Christmas, meaning around four glasses of wine spread over the entire meal. Everyone must guess for themselves how many glasses are there. Because the limit of how much wine a person can tolerate varies from person to person.

It is also important to always drink enough water. If alcohol happens to you unexpectedly, you can take a short break from drinking and opt for a glass of water. But what really matters is that you can enjoy Christmas to the fullest – without a pesky hangover the next morning, if possible.
