Netflix is closing out 2023 with a big sci-fi bang: Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon – Part 1: Child of Fire” was released on December 22. And because Netflix promotes the action movie more extensively than any other movie, by displaying the banner in all user profiles, a large number of people have already seen the action adventure and are probably wondering: When and how to do Kora (Sofia Boutella), Gunnar (Michiel Huisman) and so forth?
Because ‘Rebel Moon – Part 1: Child of Fire’ comes to a small conclusion about Kora’s mission on behalf of her village, but the overarching story remains unfinished. We will go into what exactly remains to be said later in the text, because we don’t want to give any spoilers here – we just want to tell you when you can see the sequel: “Rebel Moon – Part 2: The Scar Maker‘coming to Netflix on April 19, 2024.
It’s no secret that there will be a sequel. Not only has it been known for a long time that Zack Snyder will tell his rebel story in two parts, before possibly even more sequels, spin-offs and series in a possible ‘Rebel Moon’ universe. Moreover, calling “Child of Fire” as “Rebel Moon – Part 1” immediately makes it clear to everyone that there is more to come. But what needs to be told in “Rebel Moon 2”?
The ending of “Rebel Moon – Part 1” leaves questions unanswered
Warning: Details about “Rebel Moon – Part 1” will now be lost. After part 1 we now know who is meant by “The Scar Maker” after which part 2 is given the title – it is Kora herself, who is not really called Kora, but rather Arthelais. Now it is revealed how she got this nickname.
And that should take us even further into her past. Because even though we already know that she was the bodyguard of Princess Issa (Stella Grace Fitzgerald), who had magical powers, we still don’t know what became of the child and to what extent Kora had a hand in it. Did the warrior do something to get her called the “Scar Maker”? This is at least heavily hinted at and could be a reason why her adoptive father Balisarius (Fra Fee) hides most of his face behind a full beard.
However, the story of the princess is not the only one that has not yet been told to the end. At the end of ‘Rebel Moon – Part 1’, Kora’s adoptive father Balisarius once again opens up a whole new dimension to his conflict with Kora: now he wants to have his daughter tortured and murdered in front of the Senate. And if Admiral Atticus Noble (Ed Skrein) fails to bring his daughter to Balisarius, Noble will die in her place.
Atticus Noble – battered but not dead
So Noble now has a very personal and even essential motive to find Kora in “Rebel Moon – Part 2”. However, Kora does not know that Noble is still alive. She returned to her home village with Gunnar and the other rebels after they destroyed the warship “The King’s Gaze” – and supposedly killed Noble. However, viewers already know that Noble is still alive. This fact was not left open as a cliffhanger for part 2…
But what exactly brought Noble back to life, why he has a port in the back of his head for a communication link and other interfaces on his body, and on what virtual level he met Balisarius – all this must be explained to us in Part 2. The very last scene of “Rebel Moon – Part 1” once again uses one of the strongest “Star Wars” references in the entire film:
When Atticus Noble, physically almost beaten to death and with little chance of survival, is first fitted with tubes in a kind of operating room and then is startled out of his bed at the very end, it is strongly reminiscent of the supervillain Darth Vader who gets up after his fight (while Anakin Skywalker) was put in a life support suit with Obi-Wan Kenobi in a laboratory – a dead villain rises, only the mask and rattling breathing are missing.
What about robot Jimmy?
One of the last images in ‘Rebel Moon – Part 1: Child of Fire’ makes you particularly curious about the possible future of another character. After we Robot Jimmy (beautifully spoken in the original by Anthony Hopkins) only seen at the beginning of the film, At the end of “Part 1” he stands with an antler crown in the middle of a corn field on the moon Veldt.
This gives hope that Jimmy will be in “Rebel moon 2“ will be there again, maybe even play a bigger role. Kora can certainly use a (former) battle robot in her rebellion against the Motherworld, which should make for some cool fight scenes as well – and perhaps Jimmy’s past from his active time as the king’s soldier also holds a few secrets. After all, it was Jimmy who, at the very beginning, told the legend of the princess who should unite the kingdom and bring peace…
