Whether it’s a children’s choir, a radio station, or a department store, “Jingle Bells” are heard everywhere at Christmas time. What few people know: The catchy Christmas carol was actually written in 1857 as “One-Horse Open Sleigh” for the U.S. Thanksgiving festival celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. A song about the joy of young people in a sleigh race. It was republished in 1859, this time under the title “Jingle Bells”. The song made history on December 16, 1965, when two American astronauts broadcast the famous track from space to entertain their colleagues on Earth.
