With “Cthulhu’s Call” from 1928, HP Lovecraft would perhaps deliver the most legendary short horror story of all time. It’s all about a man named Francis Thurston, who gradually comes into contact with a mysterious cult that worships a cosmic monster named Cthulhu, who is said to have once ruled the Earth. In doing so, Lovecraft intended to establish the Cthulhu mythos, which had a lasting influence on artists such as Stephen King and Guillermo del Toro.
While many filmmakers in the past have shown great interest in tackling the Cthulhu mythos on the big screen, there has been no direct film adaptation of Cthulhu’s Call, only comics, video or board games. But that will change soon, because now via Deadline has been announced James Wan (“Saw,” “Aquaman”) took the short story and turned it into a feature film.
James Wan could be the right man
James Wan returns to his horror roots and should be able to put the experiences he had while filming “Aquaman” to good use on “Cthulhu’s Call”. Finally, HP Lovecraft’s short story also has an important connection with the mysteries that lie beneath the surface of the sea. If James Wan is responsible for an adequate film adaptation, we can expect a sensational, visually stunning, interstellar rush.
A number of films in the past have already proven that HP Lovecraft can be approached skillfully. The main examples here are probably “Re-Animator” or “The Color from Space”. To prepare for “Cthulhu’s Call,” you should also watch “Underwater,” which stars Kristen Stewart and is definitely worth checking out.
