On Thursday, Swiss Solidarity and its partner organizations called for a national day of solidarity under the motto ‘Education for all’. Half of the donations collected will be used in Switzerland.
The other half goes to projects abroad for children and young people. “All children and young people should be able to develop according to their capabilities and receive a good education,” said Federal Councilor Viola Amherd in the Swiss Solidarity press release.
Globally, 244 million school-aged children are unable to attend school, it was said. Children who do not have access to education are often at increased risk of poverty and social exclusion. But young people in Switzerland are also affected; almost one in ten young people have no qualifications or education. These people are four times more likely to live in poverty later.
With the support of SRG, Swiss Solidarity has been organizing various solidarity initiatives in all parts of Switzerland since mid-December. According to the announcement, Thursday is the highlight of the solidarity week, which has been held since December 16 under the name “Coeur à Coeur” in French-speaking Switzerland and since December 18 on SRF 3.
Donation pledges on the topic “Education for all: a future for children and youth in Switzerland and worldwide” can be made from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Swisscom’s toll-free number 0800 87’07 07. You can also donate directly online at www.glueckskette.ch, via Twint or at the post office with the mention “Education”. (sda)
