Champagne is expensive

Small 0.375 liter bottles of champagne sell for around ten francs, while regular bottles usually start at 20 francs. It is clear that these are not the highest quality champagnes. However, these prices show that champagne does not necessarily have to be expensive.

2

Champagne is rare

The 34,200 hectares of cultivated vineyard area in France’s wine region, Champagne, is more than twice that of Switzerland. More than 325 million bottles of Champagne were sold in 2022 alone. So it’s no surprise that champagne can be found in almost every supermarket.

3

Champagne is served in straight glasses

In old movies, you can often see champagne being drunk from shallow champagne glasses. This may seem elegant, but it causes bubbles to escape more quickly and reduces aromatic development. Champagne feels most at home in tulip-shaped glasses.

4

Champagne doesn’t need to come from France

Yes, because Champagne is a protected appellation of origin. Winemakers in the small Champagne village in the canton of Vaud recently had to learn: They are not allowed to write the name of their village on their wine bottles. However, there are many countries around the world that produce sparkling wine using the same grape varieties and the same production process (traditional method) as champagne.

5

Champagne can only consist of three grape varieties

This statement is also incorrect. Although Chardonnay, Pinot noir, and Meunier make up the lion’s share of all grape varieties grown in Champagne, approximately 99 percent, four other grape varieties are officially permitted: Arbanne, Fromenteau, Petit Meslier, and Pinot Blanc.
