Why is there so much controversy under the Christmas tree?

Is Christmas the holiday of love? As the harrowing headlines of the last few days have shown, sparks fly around the Christmas tree again and again, and violence even escalates into murders. Why is it so difficult for some people to celebrate peacefully?

Stress expert Dr. Klaus Heer. “It’s a time of so much darkness. The days are never as short as they are now. “So you’re fishing in the dark and you’re rarely as helpless as you are,” says the couples therapist and author. “Christmas always falls around this time.” This is a solid tradition that one cannot shake and does not want to shake. You have to please everyone, which is clearly an excessive demand.

“You definitely want to be happy.”

Klaus Heer explains that aspirations are deep and expectations are high: “You definitely want to be happy. This causes emotional stress. People have free time and they gather together in a small space.”

Intimacy quickly turns into frustrating friction, says couples therapist: “If the year was without love, the end of the year can’t be love.” The problem is not just traffic congestion on the roads. It also accumulates in some heads, hearts and stomachs. “A fierce energy builds up, and sometimes at Christmas it erupts in a matter of seconds over something small, especially when there are calories and too much alcohol,” says Heer.

Expert advice: “You can tone down the Christmas tradition a bit and talk to each other at your convenience about what you can learn from previous Christmas experiences and how you want to redesign the celebration this time. It takes courage to change and leave conflicts behind.”
