If you have missed a number of films in the cinema recently, you can still catch up at the end of the year. The prestige Netflix house production ‘Maestro’ by and starring Bradley Cooper will now also be released exclusively on the streaming platform shortly after the cinema release. Starting this week, a top-tier Hollywood-licensed title called “No Hard Feelings” will also be released. The film starring Jennifer Lawrence, one of the comedies of the year, only recently hit theaters.
These are just some of the films and series that Netflix will bring us in the coming week. Even on Christmas Eve there won’t be a quiet moment with a recommended science fiction film. Speaking of sci-fi, ‘Rebel Moon’ also opens this week.
We have fought our way through the offer and, as you know from us every week, selected the titles that sound particularly promising and/or are likely to interest many of you. Here are the Netflix highlights for the week of December 18 to 24, 2023:
Monday: Excellent Oscar cinema, horror and a big red dog
Netflix opens the week with a few films. There is the family adventure film “Clifford the big red dog“which was only released in theaters two years ago “Son of Saul“. We can especially recommend the latter. The moving Holocaust drama was named best foreign-language film at the 2016 Oscars and received 4.5 stars from us.
With ‘The Rope Curse 3’, the Taiwanese horror series about curses, exorcists, ghosts and other supernatural things continues on Netflix.
Tuesday: Comedy with Trevor Noah
On Tuesday, Netflix introduces one of its many regular stand-up specials. In “Trevor Noah: Where Was I?” South African comedian and talk show host Trevor Noah also focuses on Germany. The jokes are based on his various travels – including through our country.
Wednesday: Bradley Cooper as a music legend
Mid-week, Netflix gives us one of the streaming service’s prestige projects for this year. After “master“ was briefly shown in cinemas, the Bradley Cooper biopic with himself in the role of composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein is now available exclusively as a streaming subscription. The drama, which also stars Carey Mulligan and Matt Bomer, is one of the streaming service’s big Oscar titles for this season.
Thursday: A cult video game character is now racing across Netflix
The new Friday high is safe for many Netflix subscribers “Sonic the Hedgehog 2“. The sequel to the hit film ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ not only brings the blue cult video game hero and Jim Carrey as the legendary villain Dr. Robotnik returns, but also features some other popular characters, especially Knuckles and Tails.
Friday: The full program for everyone – sometimes even earlier than normal
Netflix really starts on Friday. First of all, it is natural “Rebel Moon: Part 1: Child of Fire“ to call. Zack Snyder’s own version of “Star Wars” is expected and pushed like no other film on the streaming service. The film should be presented to all Netflix subscribers in large format on their homepage. A new release even appears on the streaming service five hours earlier than usual. If you’re particularly curious, you can get up as early as four in the morning in this country.
You then see a kind of “The Seven Samurai” in a world that is reminiscent of “Star Wars”. As an empire oppresses a people, a woman with extraordinary powers tries to hire several half-hearted characters to rise up against the oppressors. We’ve already seen the movie. Learn more in our FILMSTARTS review of “Rebel Moon: Part 1: Child of Fire.”
All is lost compared to “Rebel Moon” – although Netflix has other high-profile (and better) reboots. “Gyeongseong creature“ about the battle against a special monster in 1945 has the potential to become a must-see series for all fans of Korean productions. “The Collini Case” is a top-class German legal drama about a young lawyer, played by Elyas M’Barek, who ends up in the middle of a very special case.
Finally with appears “No hard feelings“ one of the comedies of the year, exactly six months after its theatrical release. Jennifer Lawrence goes all out as a cash-strapped woman who takes on the task of seducing a reluctant boy – including a naked and brutal fight on the beach.
Saturday: short break
However, Netflix hasn’t announced anything for December 23 that we think would be particularly interesting. Anyone who thinks that the streaming service is just taking it easy on Christmas is wrong…
Sunday: Another big boost for Christmas Eve – with a sci-fi highlight
Because even though the majority of people in Germany spend Christmas Eve in the family circle rather than in front of the fag box, there is a lot of stock.
“Melancholia” is another series from Korea, “My brother-in-law is a vampire” seems like a very strange comedy, but we especially want to introduce “Stowaway – Stowaway” here. In most of the world, the science fiction film appeared on Netflix a few years ago, but in our country it first appeared in cinemas. After landing on Amazon Prime Video in the spring, it will now also be on Netflix in this country from Christmas. You can read what makes the film, starring Anna Kendrick, Toni Collette, Danie Dae Kim and “John Wick 4” star Shamier Anderson, so special in our review.
