“(…) I’ve been lucky my whole career,” commented Patrick Macmanus, host of “Dr. Death,” when asked about his career in the entertainment industry.
“Luck,” Macmanus believes, will be a term we hear for at least the next four years because a series of events was the reason he became the showrunner of “Dr. Death,” though he doesn’t know why. They chose him.
Macmanus was originally supposed to be an actor, he became one Angels with that goal, but he was very bad, according to him, he didn’t do it well and he discovered another side where he was good, he wrote his first screenplay.
The screenplay was never created, and he wrote another 234, which, although good, suffered the same fate as the first, and when he was about to quit, jobless and nearing the end of his life, birth of his first child, he got the first programit wasn’t his, he was like a writer and it made him get more occasions until I can help direct.
Macmanus admitted that there are many other people who know what they are doing better than him, however, after working in the “Marco Polo”from Netflixand “Happy” they took him to “Dr. Death”.
The production in question is a miniseries, USA Networkbased on the true story of Dr. Christopher Duntschneurosurgeon, considered a star in the medical community of Dallas, Texas, responsible for a series of deaths and tragedies per bad practice. Furthermore, he was inspired by podcast of the same name dedicated to true crime.
Horror is Macmanus’ favorite genre and it’s hard to scare him, not because he’s strong but because he’s played, watched and read a lot of horror, however the podcast affected him in a very real way and listening to it scared the crap out of him.
In this sense, Macmanus found a unique opportunity to tell true crimes and at the same time make aware on patient safety and advocacy, and the problems of the medical system in the United States.
To make “Dr. Death,” Macmanus had “phenomenal team“, assured the actors and crew address and writerseveryone was a fundamental piece to putting this puzzle together.
Filming was done in pandemic from COVID-19in five months he saw the family only once, and they faced several challenges, and yet he wouldn’t think of doing it any other way or with other people. He hopes that the miniseries will entertain, which is its main purpose, and that the audience will appreciate the text, cinematography, direction and performances.
“(…) And I hope they appreciate the pieces of the puzzle that brought the show to life. I really hope people understand that what we were trying to do was honor the memory of the victims, whether they were alive or dead, I want you to also understand what we were trying to say about the medical system and failure medical system, about the fact that they have the right as patients to be empowered to ask questions, come back and do additional research on their own or seek a second opinion. That they should not accept what they are told as the only way. In that regard, I also don’t want them to enter the medical field with fear,” Macmanus emphasized.
