“Wonka“ has reached the top of the German cinema charts with Timothée Chalamet. More than 300,000 tickets were sold during the opening weekend, good enough for first place. Disney’s “Wish” follows not far behind with a strong showing. 210,000 viewers are an increase from the opening weekend. In any case, the film should remain successful in the Christmas cinema program in Germany.
Germany: No streaming film has ever been as successful as ‘Napoleon’ in cinemas
The record announcement can then be found at number 3 – with Ridley Scott’s ‘Napoleon’. Approximately 110,000 additional tickets sold bring the total to 650,000. This overtakes Martin Scorsese’s “Killers Of The Flower Moon” (almost 600,000) and ‘Napoleon’ is now the most successful film from a streaming service in German cinemas. Because ‘Napoleon’ was actually made for AppleTV+, but will also be seen on the big screen before the streaming release.
‘The Hunger Games – The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes’ (110,000 visitors) and ‘Saw
USA: Record for Hayao Miyazaki
In the US the picture is completely different because “Wonka” has not even started here and “Wish” is publishing rather disappointing figures. At the top, however, is Hayao Miyazaki’s new anime “The Boy and the Heron” with sales of $12.8 million. It is the first time in history that a Japanese anime has topped the US box office charts after one weekend.
It won’t be long before you can see this excellent film in German cinemas. The official theatrical release is January 4, 2024, but there are also previews in some cities around Christmas weekend and New Year’s Eve. We give a clear recommendation to go to the cinema, how you can see that in our enthusiastic review.
In the North American cinema charts, places 2 through 5 are followed by “The Hunger Games – The ballad of songbirds and snakes” ($9.4 million), “Godzilla Minus One” ($8.4 million), “Trolls 3” ($6.2 million) and then “Wish” ($5.3 million). Last week’s leader, “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé,” fell to seventh place with $5 million due to a whopping 77% drop in sales.
