“He doesn’t want to be with me because of his religion”

A few weeks ago I met a truly incredible man. We went on trips together, talked for hours about anything and everything, and I haven’t felt so connected in years. It really felt like love at first sight – or at least the second. We met by chance in the park…

I’m already starting to imagine what our future together could look like. But then came the shock: he told me that his religion forbids him from having a relationship with anyone outside his religious community. He belongs to a pretty strict community and for him this is an absolute no-go. It’s not a cult, so he doesn’t have to give money or live there or anything, but they do pray together a lot and he can only have one woman who has the same faith as him and is also there. His family and friends are all there too.

I’m torn. On the one hand, I am fascinated by the depth of his beliefs and have even thought about joining this community. But then I wonder if that wouldn’t be too big a step to just be with someone. I’m also a believer, but not that extreme.

Have any of you ever experienced something like this? How did you decide what the right path was?
