“Orion space patrol“ will be published for the first time today, December 7, 2023 Full box* – which any fan of the German science fiction cult should really enjoy.
Because Eurovideo is releasing the TV classic in a set that not only contains all episodes of the former street sweeper, but also the producer’s cut ‘Return to the Cinema’, which was even shown on the big screen in 2003. Over and beyond the series appears DVD* And Bluray* and for the first time ever on 4K Blu-ray!
And one thing in advance: if you remember “Raum Patrol – The Fantastic Adventures of the Spaceship Orion”, as the first and probably best-known German science fiction series was originally called, from the old ARD broadcasts, you can look forward to it. Looking forward to an upgrade worth it: “Orion Space Patrol” looks better than its creators ever imagined…
“Orion Space Patrol” – Next stop: the year 3000 in Ultra HD
In “Space Patrol Orion,” a space fleet is set in the distant future of the year 3000 and is tasked with protecting humanity from various dangers from the universe – after all, there are all kinds. But Captain McLane (Dietmar Schönherr) and his crew are not afraid of the alien invaders – and boldly embark on their adventurous missions.
Once launched as a brave attempt by ARD to break new ground in TV, the series regularly attracted an audience of millions to their TV sets on Saturday evenings – with impressive viewing figures that are rarely seen these days. However, that was ultimately not enough to continue the complex and therefore extremely expensive production. It was over after just seven episodes, but to this day they still enjoy an undisputed cult status. After all, it is a piece of German television history – to which the final (?) finishing touches are now being given almost 60 years later.
We were able to preview the 4K version and are, to put it mildly, absolutely thrilled: it was a very special experience. Because of course “Raum Patrol Orion” is available in the original 4:3 format, of course in black and white (color television was already common in the US at the time, but not yet in Germany). In contrast, the brilliance of the images seems almost strange – until after a few moments you get used to it and finally realize: I just want to see ‘Space Patrol Orion’ like that!
Although the original sound in 2.0 mono is clear and detailed, but should not make your home theater shake, real wonders have been achieved in terms of picture quality. Anyway, you can’t currently imagine that the cult series would ever look better than it does here. Rich contrasts and impressive sharpness, which brings out details that were once probably not even visible on TV, make ‘Raum Patrol Orion’ a completely new experience that is unparalleled. A TV production from Germany that is over 50 years old and of such quality? This has probably never happened before.
So whether you’ve been a fan since the beginning or just feel like bridging this education gap, if you want to experience “Raum Patrol Orion” in the best possible quality – and also something with extra content like interviews, behind-the-scenes scenes and more start – you cannot ignore the new home cinema edition. For anyone without Ultra HD equipment, the regular Blu-ray is also worth it, as it can come close to the 4K version. The DVD did not end up in our player.
