Is online dating leaving you overwhelmed?

If the search for a partner becomes too exhausting, you may suffer from online dating burnout. Wera Aretz, professor of psychology at the Fresenius University of Applied Sciences in Cologne, now wants to get to the bottom of this phenomenon. Looking for participants for a study.

The people you are looking for must have dating experience. This may have been collected both during online partner search and offline dating.

“Although many users initially enjoy online dating, prolonged and very intense use can also have negative consequences for the psyche,” Aretz was quoted as saying in a media release. The wide choice of possible partners creates the risk of certain personality types feeling overwhelmed – as the catchphrase goes, “I can’t decide.”

At the same time, ghosting experiences, where potential partners immediately cut off all communication without warning, can have negative effects on self-esteem. “These and other factors can be very psychologically stressful and lead to online dating burnout,” explains the online dating expert.

Anyone can participate in online dating efforts

The emerging phenomenon raises important questions about mental health and how to deal with digital social interactions. “Therefore, it is important to analyze the causes, symptoms and preventive measures in the context of online dating burnout in order to better understand the risks involved and develop possible solutions,” the scientist emphasizes.

The study aims to compare online dating users with people who do not or no longer use online dating portals. Anyone can answer the survey – regardless of whether the participant has never used online dating, is not currently using online dating, or is actively using online dating.

In Switzerland, one in five couples find each other online. This rate is especially high among people in their thirties. (No)
