It comes down to 8 points: How to take a professional break abroad?

Admire the wonders of the world instead of sitting in the office: Taking a break from work can broaden your horizons.
Nicole Muller

Counting sheep in New Zealand, making cheese in the Swiss Alps, or awakening your kundalini while doing yoga in India; Whatever your dream program is, you need to be well prepared for a professional holiday. The first step is for the boss to accept it. Not all employers are enthusiastic about such ideas; There’s a widespread fear that hard-working employees will realize they’d rather be doing something else with their lives and eventually quit.

But more and more companies are seeing the benefits of taking a break: renewed employees who bring new ideas and enthusiasm back to work. You should write down the most important points together: When and for how long will you be away, how much is considered vacation, how much overtime is paid, how much is not paid?

Once this is done comes the more complicated part: insurance.

one

accident insurance

Anyone who works and works more than eight hours a week is automatically insured against non-work accidents. In case of interruption, coverage continues for 31 days. You can get agreement insurance for a maximum of six more months. About 45 francs, depending on your insurance. This means lost wages and medical expenses are insured. The situation is different with accident insurance through health insurance: although it is cheaper, it only covers medical expenses and does not cover lost wages. Deductibles and exemptions will also be paid.

2

Daily sick pay

Many companies have daily sick pay insurance for their employees, although this is not mandatory in Switzerland. You can directly ask the human resources department or the insurance company what regulations apply regarding unpaid leave. Some automatically meet the statute of limitations, some offer additional coverage, and some discontinue protection. Then you can insure yourself privately; but this is usually relatively expensive.

3

retirement fund

If you can no longer work, the risk part of the pension fund pays the disability pension in addition to the disability pension. This is really important; because the IV pension is barely enough to live on. It currently costs a maximum of 2,450 francs per month.

Employees are insured against death and disability for one month from the beginning of the holiday; this is the legal minimum requirement. But most pension funds offer better solutions. The insurance options available to the pension fund during paid leave depend on the relevant regulations. It’s best to ask the cashier or the company’s human resources department.

4

AHV

If you work less than nine months a year or less than 50 percent of your normal working hours, it is best to contact your council’s AHV branch. The compensation fund then compares whether the contributions from remaining employment make up at least half of the contributions you would have to pay as an unemployed person. If it is less, or if the annual contribution, including employer contributions, is below 514 francs (corresponding to a gross annual income of 4,851 francs), you must pay the same contribution as a non-working person.

5

Health insurance

You will remain insured with the health insurance company unless you establish a new place of residence abroad. Whether or not you have registered in Switzerland. This means that you are insured in EU and EFTA countries and have the same benefits as those living there. Important: Pack your insurance card; The European health insurance card is on the back.

Outside the EU/EFTA, basic insurance pays at most twice the cost of the same treatment in Switzerland. This is not enough in countries where prices are high, such as the USA, Canada, Japan and Australia; costs can be significantly higher than in Switzerland. Here, you must take out additional insurance from your health insurance company.

In EU and EFTA countries, Swiss people are insured under the same conditions as local residents. To benefit from the benefits, simply show your Swiss health insurance card.

6

Travel insurance

If you’re traveling abroad, annual travel insurance may be useful. It consists of travel assistance and cancellation insurance.

Travel allowance supplements the coverage of health insurance and accident insurance, for example for rescue, travel and transport expenses. The employer’s accident insurance only covers a maximum of 29,640 francs. And basic health insurance only covers 50 percent of medical transport and rescue costs, up to a maximum of 500 francs per year, and that’s only in Switzerland.

Cancellation cost insurance covers you if you or a relative gets sick or has an accident. Or if you have to be home due to break-in or natural damage. You can find details in the general insurance conditions.

Emergency transportation abroad can quickly become expensive. Travel insurance is worth covering any additional costs.

7

unemployment insurance

You cannot continue to pay unemployment insurance yourself during unpaid leave. But even after a longer break, you may still be eligible. What is decisive is whether you have worked in Switzerland for at least 12 months of the last 24 months at the time you register with RAV.

8.

Personal liability insurance

Whether you’re staying at home or traveling, this insurance is always worth it. For example, if you make a hole in the hotel carpet or hit someone with your bike, you pay. Private liability insurance is generally valid worldwide.
