Dave Filoni probably didn’t put much thought into the opening of “Ahsoka” when he included a Loth cat who lives on Lothal with Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo). First and foremost, it was probably one of many references to “Star Wars Rebels.” After all, the cats that lived on Lothal already played a role in the animated series. But now Filoni was clearly forced to think a little more intensely about Sabine’s pet, who goes by the name Murley. Because many ‘Star Wars’ fans have had some questions and especially concerns since ‘Ahsoka’ started in August 2023.
Because when we meet Murley in the first episode, the animal is already happily waiting for Sabine, so of course he lives with her and is there in all subsequent scenes. But when Sabine cuts her hair in the second episode to accompany Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) on her adventure, she simply leaves Murley behind in the tower where she lives. The cat can be seen there shortly before the cutting scene, so it wasn’t taken elsewhere.
As we know, Sabine ends up in another galaxy at the end of the series season. And Since then, many fans have wondered: is Murley now doomed to die without his owner?
Even before we realized that Sabine wouldn’t be returning to Lothal anytime soon, there was discussion: Does the loner have any acquaintances she trusts enough to care for her cat? And did she organize this before she left? Or did she just give Murley something to eat?
After the final, the discussion became more intense, because it was now clear that the food supply would run out. Questions after questions… And where does the cat actually do its business? How does she even get down from that high tower? Murley can’t operate the elevator, can he?
But all these concerns can now be put aside. “Ahsoka” creator Dave Filoni noticed that fans had a lot of questions and thought about them extensively. He said this on the ‘Star Wars’ podcast of the magazine now explained in detail how Murley is doing.
‘Murley is smart enough’
On the one hand, he states that Sabine clearly did not include Murley. The Mandalorian definitely left the door ajar. With that, Murley leaves the room. According to Filoni, getting down from the tower is also no problem. When asked whether Murley might not be able to use the elevator after all, he doesn’t even want to answer, because he doesn’t need it: “Murley is smart enough to go up and down the tower through the ventilation shafts.” The cat can always come to the ground floor if he wants.
The food issue is also not the problem that some black-painted fans online have drawn. Murley is not a domestic cat but a wild cat. Murley enjoys “the good situation” with Sabine and the “fact that you get to eat there”. Murley is an ‘opportunist’ in this regard. But Filoni points out that there are certainly more Loth cats living in the area – meaning: they get their food from nature, so Murley will be able to do the same.
The ‘Star Wars’ creator is clearly fascinated by how much attention the fans have put into it, jokingly saying at the end: “There could have been a whole documentary about what happened to the Loth cat.”
The majority of fans will probably be satisfied if Murley’s fate is clarified again in a future “Star Wars” story (perhaps the second season “Ahsoka”?), so that it is officially canon and we don’t just have to believe Filoni. But these statements should bring peace of mind, because we can finally enjoy the first season again without worrying about the cat.
