This weekend, as every year, the big names of the Swiss design world will have fun at the Zurich Congress Building. Blickfang, Switzerland’s largest design fair, brings together a large number of products that are sold in the online shops of individual designers and manufacturers or in individual stores throughout Switzerland. And that’s not all: there are also suppliers from Germany and Austria in the fields of fashion, ceramics, furniture, home accessories, jewelery and textile design; Among them there are those who have won various design awards.

Many are lone wolves who passionately produce their products mostly locally and in small quantities. Of course, this is also reflected in the prices: Frankly, a thin wallet does not have many remarkable features. You can find everything Christmas-related here: a beautiful scarf for your dad, a special vase for your mom, the most beautiful wooden boards of all time for your uncle who loves to cook, and earrings for your girlfriend. Or just something practical and beautiful for yourself. And since not everyone can make it to Blickfang in Zurich this Sunday, we present here a selection of particularly beautiful and innovative Swiss design products.

cutting board art

Art made of wood: cutting board by Seosa.

Sometimes there are everyday objects that are so beautifully and artistically created that it is almost a shame to use them. This is what happens to Basel-labeled Seosa cutting boards. Behind him is cabinet maker Fabian Sens, who specializes in inlay work as well as the usual carpentry work such as bespoke furniture, staircases or bar and shop fittings. No one is cutting bread or vegetables on their expertly prepared “boards.” However, as a cheese plate, they are a showy piece on every table.

Perfection in height

Award-winning textile design for the neck. “Vienna, babette” scarf by Caroline Flueler.

If titles of nobility were given in individual design disciplines, Caroline Flueler from Zug would be the undisputed queen or princess of textile design. The Zurich Design Museum has included some of its award-winning designs in its Swiss Design Collection. They are also sought after by large customers due to their corporate identity. For example, employees at Basler Kantonalbank wore long Fluelers ties, and the Swiss airline’s seats featured textile designs. However, ordinary people can also brighten up their daily lives with Flueler’s extraordinary color combinations. Online stores have tablecloths, pillowcases, kitchen towels and, above all, beautiful scarves and scarves.

Perfection on the shoulder

Leather from happy cows looks like this. “Shopping” bag from Fin.

The Swiss meat industry slaughters more than 400,000 cattle every year in this country. Zurich label fin uses only the best hides: from Biosuisse-certified cattle that are also allowed to grow as mother cows. Since there is no longer a traditional tannery in Switzerland where vegetable tanning takes place, the hides travel to Tuscany by rails and trucks. Bags, diaries and wallets are made of 100 percent natural leather, which becomes more beautiful and soft over time.

The design classic of tomorrow

Laure Gremion’s “Verso” vase can also be arranged the other way around. It is suitable for completely different arrangements with the green “balloon” on the top.

Multi-award-winning Lausanne industrial and product designer Laure Gremion works on a wide range of projects and with a wide variety of materials. Whether steel pots for gardeners or display cases for watch manufacturers such as Hermes, lamps or chocolates, Gremion can do it all. She could even create a design classic of the future with her two-piece “Verso” vase that can be set up in two different ways.

A stool shakes her dancing leg

Stool made of ash wood.

Wood is generally considered a hard material. But you don’t notice any of this in the Lucerne label niuform: two product designers Simone Hölzl and Christine Urech handle it with a lightness that puts you in a good mood. Its bent-legged stools and tables look as if they could jump and dance at any moment. The duo were awarded the famous Wooden Award for their outstanding designs due to their refreshing shapes.

Clean coat, clean rivers

The fabric of the “Swiss Waste Jacket” is made from 14 discarded PET bottles.

With this jacket you clean the environment. German architect and designer Peter Hornung (42) living in Zurich does this for you. A few years ago, while swimming among the discarded PET bottles in Limmat, the following idea came to his mind: This raw material accumulated in the weir, extracted from there and previously sent to the waste incineration plant, should be used! Since then he has been fishing PET directly on Limmat every week. The river plastic is then delivered to Thurgau for shredding. In Ticino, the sequins are eventually spun into a type of polyester thread that is woven, cut and sewn into jackets at a family business in Varese, northern Italy. The filling consists of recycled, washed and sterilized Swiss down. Each jacket has 14 PET bottles in its fabric; completely upcycled.
