In Switzerland, less waste ended up in garbage bags in 2022 than ten years ago. Yet a fifth of waste consists of materials that can actually be recycled. Moreover, more than half of the food thrown away could be avoided.
This is shown by the Federal Office for the Environment (BAFU) in its new study ‘Survey on waste composition 2022’, which it presented to the media in Bern on Tuesday. According to this research, approximately 6 million tons of waste comes from households and small businesses every year. That is 671 kilos per person.
About half of this municipal waste is collected and recycled separately. The other half goes to waste incineration plants. Compared to the last garbage bag analysis from 2012, household waste per person has decreased by 58 to 148 kilos.
However, 31 kilos of it could have been reused. According to the Bafu, this includes processed and cooked food waste, preparation waste from fruit and vegetables and plastic packaging such as milk or shampoo bottles. (saw/sda)
