Warm, soft, light as a feather: anyone who owns clothing made of cashmere has something very special in their wardrobe. Because cashmere is probably the most valuable natural fiber. It is obtained from the fine hair of the Cashmere goat living in the high mountains of China, Mongolia, Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan. During the fur change in spring, valuable wool is gently combed.
It takes the hair of about three animals to make a sweater. If you buy such a special example, you want to get something out of it for as long as possible. Unfortunately, it often happens that the valuable piece loses its shape or suddenly becomes lint. You can put an end to this with the tips below! This is how cashmere is cared for.
Forget hand washing! For woollens, a gentle washing program at low speed is more suitable and easier than hand washing. Most modern washing machines have this cycle.
And here’s how it works: Turn the cashmere piece inside out, wash at 30 degrees (never higher!) and spin on low speed. Use mild detergent, hair shampoo or cashmere silk shampoo.
In no case should cashmere be washed after each use. This encourages nodule formation and, in the worst case scenario, creates small holes. Even if it is your favorite piece of clothing, you should take a 24-hour break from wearing a quality piece.
It is ideal to wash cashmere after every fourth use and hang it in the fresh air occasionally. Moths in sweaters etc. It is a good idea to keep a scented bag containing lavender or cedar wood in your closet to prevent them from eating through food. This way holes can be avoided.
Stay away from the dryer! Even in cold weather, the risk of the piece shrinking and losing its shape is very high. Better yet: Lay it on a drying rack to dry. Use a towel as a base; this is faster and the streaks on the drying rack are not visible through the fabric. If the good piece is a little too short, it can exceptionally be dried by hanging it on a hanger.
Pilling, which are small nodules caused by friction, occasionally occurs. Highly stressed areas such as the inside of the arms are particularly affected. You should remove those pesky hairs from time to time. In no case do not tear or cut small nodules; this will only cause damage. To remove fluff, there are special razors or cashmere combs. The former is particularly suitable for fine plain knits, while the comb is also suitable for products with a structure such as cable knits.
