Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) and the University of Geneva want to find new starting points for treatments against vocal hallucinations, they write in a study published in the journal “Psychological Medicine.”
“We still have no idea what actually happens in the brain during auditory hallucinations,” lead author Pavo Orepic said in the SNSF announcement. To enable people who are not hallucinating to hear voices, researchers designed an experiment that confused the brains of the participants.
This is based on unexpected touches of a robot’s back. According to the study, after the experiment, the subjects were more likely to believe they heard strange sounds in the noise.
