Although the Sangiovese grape variety is the most widely planted grape variety in this southern Italian wine region, it is Primitivo that stands out here. The main characteristics of full-bodied Primitivo red wines are concentrated, often overripe fruit and increased alcohol content. Bottles marked Riserva from the Primitivo di Manduria DOC region must be stored for at least two and a half years, nine months in wooden barrels, before sale. In addition, Primitivo red wines are an ideal accompaniment to dishes, especially Italian cuisine.
This famous French wine region is just a few minutes’ drive from the city of Avignon. Most vineyards are covered with round stones that store heat from the sun during the day and return it to the grapes at night. Châteauneuf-du-Pape red wines consist largely of the Grenache noir grape variety and often contain a small proportion of other grape varieties; a total of 13 of these are allowed. If you add the color variations (for example, Grenache blanc and Grenache gris), there are even 18 varieties. Common characteristics of these unique red wines are aromas of ripe red and somewhat dark fruits, as well as spicy notes such as licorice or white pepper.
While the dark Grenache noir grape variety is getting the most exciting results from Châteauneuf-du-Pape in France, it is also shining in neighboring Spain. First up is the Priorat wine region, about a two-hour drive west of Barcelona, known for its world-class Grenache. Here wines are often given some Carignan, which provides additional acidity and structure. Compared to southern French varieties, Priorat Grenache is generally slightly darker in color and its fruit is more concentrated. Heavy red wines pair perfectly with spicy stews, paella or grilled meats.
Hailing from Australia’s warm Barossa Valley, Shiraz has always been one of the world’s most powerful and full-bodied red wines. Although there are a few more elegant and lighter versions, the majority of these red wines are still bottled in a rich and ripe fruity style. Concentrated, dark and ripe fruit aromas meet with high alcohol, plenty of melt and smooth tannins. The first vines were planted in the Barossa Valley nearly 180 years ago. Even today this wine region is home to very old vineyards that, on the one hand, produce low yields, but on the other hand, produce highly concentrated fruit, which ultimately benefits the wine.
