The autumn season draws us to the mountains. The temperatures are pleasant and the trees are shining golden. Perfect conditions for an idyllic walk. However, in order to have safe and beautiful walks, there are a few things you should keep in mind in autumn.
Bern trail expert Michael Roschi (47), who has been managing director of “Swiss Hiking Trails” for seven years, explains how to properly prepare for an autumn hike.
Hiking trails above the fog line are suitable for a nice autumn walk. But first you should check if the roads are still accessible. “The ideal hiking season is autumn, as long as there is no snow at higher altitudes,” says Roschi.
The right clothing is the be-all and end-all when hiking. The onion principle is best. Roschi recommends: “It should be a comfortable layer directly on the skin, meaning something made of cotton that keeps you warm and dry. This is then followed by a thermal layer made of fleece or fleece, providing the right warmth and insulation. On the outside, a protective layer made of waterproof fabric repels wind and moisture.» Hiking boots should also be broken in and have non-slip soles.
In autumn, the weather can change quickly and surprise you. Before going for a walk, you should check the weather forecast and prepare accordingly. “In case of heavy rain, for example, you should have pre-planned shortcuts,” says Roschi.
Always follow road signs: This is the most important tip if you suddenly find yourself in a sea of fog. Road signs on Swiss hiking trails are designed to be visible even in fog. “It is recommended to have an up-to-date map with you and download the GPS tracking application to your smartphone. “Some apps even show official trail networks,” explains Roschi.
Good time planning is very important. Since it gets dark early in autumn, you should start your walk on time. Before you start walking, you should find out the exact duration of the walk. “Once it gets dark, things can get dangerous quickly,” warns Roschi. Therefore always allow sufficient reserve time!
You need energy every now and then to keep walking. Snacks should be in every hiking bag. For example, fruits, energy bars, nuts or rice cakes. Also very important when hiking: pack enough to drink. Roschi’s tip: “If the weather is colder, you can bring a thermos filled with hot tea.”
You should be well prepared for a mountain hike, especially in late autumn. As temperatures drop rapidly, some hiking trails may already be snowy or icy, making them dangerously slippery. Roschi advises: “The best thing to do is to find out about the condition of the hiking trail and contact the cantonal or local authorities if you have any questions.”
