It’s uncomfortably cold outside. There is little desire to open windows and doors. However, proper ventilation is especially important to prevent moisture from accumulating in living spaces in winter and causing mold growth.

Anyone who has automatic ventilation in their home has an advantage. Ventilation ensures a pleasant and ideal room climate. Short-term ventilation is rarely necessary, except for strong odor emissions such as raclette chat. However, it is important for comfort ventilation to have regular maintenance and filter cleaning done by an expert to prevent germs from forming and for the ventilation to work properly.

Apartments and houses that do not have comfort ventilation despite the cold need to be ventilated for five to ten minutes several times a day with the windows fully open. Ventilation will be even more efficient if you provide air flow by additionally opening doors and windows.

one

Ventilate at short but intense and frequent intervals

Continuous ventilation with slanted windows is not recommended. This is of little benefit and only increases energy consumption and therefore heating costs. While the room temperature should be around 20 degrees for a pleasant room climate in living rooms, 16 degrees is recommended in the bedroom.

Ideally, you should ventilate the room briefly before going to bed in winter. This means you can sleep with the window closed. It is recommended that the bedroom window be fully opened for at least five minutes immediately after getting up. This allows the removal of moist air that has built up overnight. You can use this time to take a shower or drink your morning coffee.

2

Ventilate the kitchen and bathroom more

If possible, the bathroom should be well ventilated, and windows and doors should be open immediately after a shower or bath. Dry the shower walls, tiles and tub. This is especially true if the bathroom has no windows. If there is ventilation, it should be opened while taking a shower.

Even in the kitchen, where more moisture can accumulate, the room should be ventilated frequently and a steam extractor should be run while cooking. It is recommended to ventilate after cooking.

3

Do not place furniture directly next to walls

When arranging your house or apartment, be careful not to place large furniture and cabinets directly on the wall to ensure air circulation between the wall and the furniture. This is especially true for furniture on colder exterior walls. Otherwise, moisture may accumulate there and cause mold to appear on furniture and walls.

4

Do not dry laundry in the apartment

If possible, laundry should not be dried in the apartment, but a drying room should be used instead. Otherwise, do not forget about additional ventilation to prevent moisture from settling in the room. It is also necessary to ventilate the room well after steam ironing.

5

Evidence of improper ventilation

If condensation forms on the windowsills, this is a clear indication that the indoor climate in the house is not correct and is not ventilated properly. It is highly recommended to ventilate it more frequently with air flow to prevent mold growth later.

In case of doubt, it is recommended to use a hygrometer. This can be used to measure humidity. Depending on the habitat, this ratio should be between 40 and 60 percent.

6

If in doubt, consult an expert

Despite everything, if mold is seen on the wall, the homeowner should be notified and an expert should be called if necessary. This way the reason can be clarified. Mold growth is not always caused by ventilation. There may also be hidden water damage that can only be detected and repaired by a professional. In this case, superficial cleaning is not sufficient as the damage will not be repaired.

Mold may occasionally form in wet rooms and can be removed by cleaning. This is harmless. Not all mold infestations are dangerous. According to expert estimates, there are around 250,000 species of mold worldwide, and only a few of them are harmful.

However, if in doubt it always makes sense to consult a professional and tenants should always inform their landlord about this. This saves you hassle and money, and your health is not put at risk.
