Anyone looking for peace and seclusion will find it here.

The offer at the campsite on Lake Toblach in South Tyrol IT is unusual: there are twelve luxury chalets on the edge of the campsite. Small houses made of local wood no longer have much to do with camping. The chalets are equipped like hotel suites; service included. Operators call this boutique camping and thus meet the growing demand for glamping, that is, flashy camping.

Each luxurious accommodation is equipped with an infrared sauna and a large terrace with sun loungers. The deluxe version has a jacuzzi on the terrace. Breakfast is delivered directly to your door.

I’m sleeping in a glass cube

But the most important point is the sleeping place in the glass cube. The glass ceiling allows guests to view the starry sky from their beds. The conditions for this are optimal because modern wooden houses are located in the middle of the Dolomite Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is no light pollution here, the view of the night sky must be second to none.

When I arrived I wondered what Skyview Chalets had to do with camping. The contrast between luxury accommodation and the tents and caravans set up next door could not be greater.

in connection with nature

Andreas Panzenberger, the third generation to run the campground on Lake Dobbiaco, knows the answer: “People who come here are looking for seclusion and connection with nature,” he says. This is what connects campers to their chalet guests. They come here to relax. No crowds at the breakfast buffet or when booking a sun lounger at the hotel pool. “Even before we owned Skyview Chalets, we had managers coming here in their RVs,” Panzenberger says.

I stand on the terrace of the chalet and let my gaze wander. Lake in front of me, forest behind me. Anyone looking for seclusion will find it here. This is why I traveled to Skyview Chalets. As a mother of three, I am drawn to the idea of being able to switch off for once, away from the stress of daily life. Turn your back on society for a weekend. Continuing my thoughts without interruption. Or do nothing.

gourmet restaurant

To accommodate its growing flamboyant clientele, Panzenberger has significantly expanded its product range in recent years. In addition to Skyview Chalets, it also opened a gourmet restaurant this year. In the middle of the campsite. I may also test this during my stay.

In the evenings, Hebbo’s serves five or seven-course meals as well as tapas. All of the products from which the menus are put together come from the local area; No pineapple or avocado here. You can get the right wine for each meal if you want.

Panzenberger makes a living here as a trained wine scholar and sommelier. There are more than 1000 items on the wine list. The menu courses are well thought out and outstanding. They often resemble small works of art. As I marvel at my meal and take photos, I notice that the tables in the gourmet restaurant are filling up. The residents are not just guests of the chalets. But there are also campers who want to treat themselves to a little luxury. Panzenberger’s calculation seems to work.

After dinner, I return to the chalet. I want to leave early the next morning. The walking route has already been planned. But first, I’m looking forward to the view through the glass ceiling above the bed. Skyview Chalet does what its name promises: the views of the stars are breathtaking.
