Pregnancy, effectiveness of the vaccine against covid-19

Since the introduction of covid-19 vaccines, there have been debates about their effectiveness during pregnancy. It has been proven to be effective, providing benefits for both mother and baby.

This was one of the conclusions reached during 20th Latin American Congress of children’s infectious diseases – SLIPE 2023.

It is necessary for pregnant women to receive a vaccine against the disease like covid-19 and influenza to protect the mother and fetus from serious complications.

“It is recommended that the vaccine against covid-19 be administered during first trimester of pregnancy and vaccinations during the last trimester”, emphasizes Dr. Gonzalo Pérez-Marc, pediatrician and one of the speakers.

Studies conducted on more than 500,000 women pregnant have shown that these vaccines are safe, with an efficiency of more than 95%.

Babies infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes covid-19, are usually asymptomatic or have mild symptoms, with a low rate of hospitalization for pneumonia (approximately 2%). Therefore, it can be said that maternal vaccination reduces the morbidity and mortality of both mother and child, and other vaccines, such as influenza and whooping cough, can be administered during pregnancy.

However, the data is encouraging, as several studies have shown that this vaccine does not increase the risk of complications such as miscarriage, death or birth defects.’

A modern mRNA platform for the delivery of Covid-19 vaccines opens the door to a promising future as updates can be made rapidly based on epidemiological data on circulating viruses.

This vaccine induces an antibody response against SARS-CoV-2 in pregnancy. Immunological reactions induced by the vaccine in pregnant and lactating women are comparable to those in non-pregnant women.

In addition, antibody levels are more than natural covid-19 infection in pregnancy.

Newborns who are breastfed by vaccinated mothers are admitted specific antibodies against this virus in amounts similar to those of babies born to previously infected mothers.

A modern mRNA platform for the delivery of Covid-19 vaccines opens the door to a promising future as updates can be made rapidly based on epidemiological data on circulating viruses.

“It is crucial that pregnant women complete theirs vaccination schedules. In this way, they protect themselves and their babies, creating antibodies that pass through the placenta and provide protection to babies during the first months,” says Dr. Yamile Sandoval, medical manager of Asofarm’s Vaccines Unit.
