A study of history teaching in Panama

The study conducted in Panama offers a valuable vision of history education in the country’s official schools, especially at the preschool and high school levels.

The Panama Canal Museum presented the results preliminary results of a two-year descriptive study whichwhich sheds light on what and how to learn in the History subject, with special reference to the history of the Panama Canal.

The preliminary findings are revealing. First of all, it is emphasized that the majority the surveyed teachers expressed difficulties in delving into the given curriculum, and those who do often rely on lectures and readings.

However, it was observed that more students level average from the pre-media level reported a better understanding of the history of the Panama Canal.

The teachers also pointed out significant limitations they face in terms of educational resources, infrastructure, training and experiential learning opportunities such as academic travel.

Furthermore, the lack of Internet access in most schools was highlighted, although some students consider the Internet to be a key resource for their academic tasks.

A worrying fact revealed by the Study is that the majority surveyed students They have never visited the museum, despite its importance in teaching history.

Teachers cited logistical obstacles and costs as the main challenges in organizing educational excursions.

In summary, this study provides insight profound and enlightening history lessons in Panamanian schools, highlighting areas for improvement and key challenges to be addressed.

The results are of great importance to the educational community, including students, teachers, schools and organizations involved in improving education in Panama.

The study was conducted in Central Panama, Western Panama, Colón, Coclé and Veraguas, and was based on the use of various research and instrumental methods such as the application of surveys to teachers, students and focus groups with a sub-sample of participating students, classroom observations and interviews.
