Cooking may seem easy at first glance. However, it is much more sensitive than expected. Mistakes happened quickly. You can simply improvise or intuitively adapt the recipe as you cook, but maximum precision is of great importance when cooking.

Some even claim that cooking is a science. Therefore, you should definitely avoid these mistakes.

Mistake 1: Not preheating properly

To avoid forgetting to preheat the oven, you should set it from the beginning. In order for the cake to be baked, the oven must be properly heated. An oven needs time to reach the correct temperature. When it heats up, it usually overheats for a while until it drops again. Too high temperatures will also damage the cake.

Error 2: Wrong quantities

During cooking, important chemical processes occur that can only occur correctly with precise quantities. Therefore, you should measure the quantities according to the recipe, not by eye. Even a small amount of error can spoil the consistency of the cake.

Mistake 3: Wrong temperature for ingredients

Accuracy is also required here. As a rule, all ingredients should be at room temperature. This means you need to remove the butter, milk, and eggs from the refrigerator before cooking. Ingredients at the wrong temperature can disrupt the chemistry of the dough.

Shortcrust pastry is an exception. It should be removed from the refrigerator shortly before use.

Error 4: Wrong sorting

The recipes are in order for a reason. First, mixing the mixture is generally easier when done in a specific order. Secondly, some ingredients need to be mixed in a certain combination to bond properly.

Mistake 5: Under or over mixing the dough

It is recommended to mix the dough by hand. This way, you can better perceive the consistency of the dough and realize that it is mixed enough. You can easily overmix the dough using an electric mixer. This happens quickly and is irreversible.

Mistake 6: Wrong baking tray

If possible, use a baking tray similar to the one in the dough recipe. If there is nothing similar, that’s okay. Then simply adjust the baking time and keep a closer eye on the cake.

Mistake 7: Wrong cooking time

The only thing that can be slightly changed in a cake recipe is the baking time. Actual temperature may vary from oven to oven. Therefore, if the cooking time is 20 minutes, you should not leave the room to watch television for 20 minutes. You should always pay attention to the cake. You should adjust the baking time according to the cake, especially if you use a different baking tray than the one in the recipe.

Mistake 8: Open the oven door

The smell may be tempting, but you should not open the oven door occasionally. Cakes especially become tough when there are temperature differences. The oven door should remain closed, especially during the first third of the cooking time. In the worst case scenario the cake may collapse. Therefore, it is better to watch the cooking process through the glass window.

Mistake 9: Let it cool in the oven

You should not remove the cake immediately after it is baked. First, it needs to cool in the oven for a few minutes. This is also due to the sensitivity of the cake to strong temperature differences.

Mistake 10: Let it rest

After baking, you should let your cake rest in the pan for approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Otherwise it may fall apart.

However, it should not remain this way for too long. After a while, the cake begins to “sweat” in the pan. Moisture then accumulates around the edges of the cake and especially at the bottom.
