“By the power of Grayskull!”: The muscular blonde He-Man is an absolute cult. In the 80s, the fighter for good was represented in every children’s room. In addition to action figures, there was a lot of merchandise and an animated series in which Prince Adam battled the evil Skeletor. And the cinema was also conquered: in ‘Masters of the Universe’, released in 1987, action star Dolph Lundgren took on the role of the man with mushroom hair – today the film is a cult for its trashy charm. But now fans are craving another blockbuster adaptation.
Unfortunately, the reboot plans are one of the biggest jokes in Hollywood right now. Ideas for a possible reboot of the “He-Man” cinema have been floating around since 2012. Somehow, however, the project doesn’t really get off the ground. Netflix recently invested a lot of time and money in ‘Masters Of The Universe’ and even found a suitable cast for the legendary muscle hero in the then shooting star Kyle Allen (‘Rosaline’). Approximately $30 million has already gone into developing the film. But since it was not possible to push the blockbuster’s final budget and it would have likely exceeded the $200 million mark, the streaming giant ultimately decided to bury the project.
However, fans shouldn’t give up hope just yet as there is still hope for the “He-Man” reboot. Instead of Netflix, Amazon could now step in to implement the project. According to consistent insider reports, Amazon MGM Studio is currently in serious talks to make the live-action film “Masters Of The Universe” from Adam and Aaron Nee (“The Lost City”).
Is the success of “Barbie” loosening your wallet?
However, negotiations still appear to be at an early stage. In the event of a takeover, new contracts would have to be concluded with the author and director duo. Apparently Amazon wants to stick with Adam and Aaron Nee and continue seeing Kyle Allen in the role of the male superman. If production at Amazon actually comes up to speed, there could even be a regular theatrical release of the toy blockbuster. This option was not offered by Netflix.
Whether or not the ‘He-Man’ movie will actually be made on Amazon is unclear at this time. But the big-screen mega-success of another toy icon this year (we’re talking about “Barbie,” of course) could mean the streaming giant is willing to take bigger financial risks to make the project happen, perhaps settling for the mega-budget of more than 200 million dollars.
