TV premiere: A bloody and sharp waste grenade for hard-boiled horror freaks

The title already suggests it, right? ‘Big Bad Rat’ is not exactly put together for fine minds and connoisseurs of fine cinematography. But every now and then, a portion of deliciously mindless horror fast food can be tasty. If you fancy a movie snack tonight, we can recommend the first free TV broadcast of the low-budget 2020 American production in Germany.

“Big Bad Rat” will be broadcast today, November 10, 2023 at 10 p.m. on Tele 5. There will be a repeat that same evening at 2:05 am. You can also watch the shocker for free in the channel’s media library until December 10. If you miss all these dates but are still interested, the FSK 16 title is also available on Blu-ray, DVD or paid video-on-demand:

“Big Bad Rat” on Tele 5: that’s the story

The holidays are here and a new hiking season is about to begin in the mountains of Southern California. Before the area is overrun with tourists, Ranger Brody (Scott C. Roe) wants to prepare the opening of a brand new campsite. To do this, he has enlisted the help of his niece Naomi (Cece Kelly) and his cousin Dylan (Caleb Thomas).

What the trio doesn’t know, however, is that radioactive toxic waste used to be disposed of at the site. This led to nature being damaged in this way and mutation creating the ultimate predator. A giant rat now lives here in its complex tunnel system beneath the area.

When the first holidaymakers show up, everything goes well at first. But then the monster suddenly comes out of his gigantic rat hole and tears everyone apart one by one. When some of Brody’s fellow rangers also fall victim to the aggressive cattle, he calls the smart local exterminator Lenny (Dave Sheridan) as a last, desperate measure. The big showdown is coming…

Well-known horror faces

Thomas J. Churchill took over the direction, script and production of the darkly humorous monster and creature horror. The New Yorker has been in the business since the late 1990s and has extensive experience in the budget horror segment. His most popular works include ‘The Amityville Harvest’ and ‘The Step Daddy’. He recently made the comedy film “Devilreaux” with, among others, “Candyman” star Tony Todd.

Speaking of horror icons, the cast of ‘Big Bad Rat’ also includes some names that genre freaks should know. For example, mix here Dave Sheridan from the satires “Scary Movie” and “Ghost Movie,” as well as Vincent M. Ward from season 3 of “The Walking Dead.”

Churchill is particularly proud of Felissa Rose’s participation in his film. The two met and became friends at a horror convention in the US in 2014. The director had been trying for a long time those from “Bloody Summer – The Camp of Horror”, “Camp Dread” and the surprise hit “Scarer 2famous scream queen to create a joint project. It finally worked with “Big Bad Rat”.
