Ozone layer: Has it recovered?

Answering the question from the title, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the answer is yes, because at the beginning of this year it announced that the ozone layer has been renewed by 1% per year since 1998.

This organization pointed out that since the signing The Montreal Protocol (a global agreement aimed at protecting the Earth’s ozone layer by phasing out chemicals that damage the ozone layer) there was a recovery.

Allegedly, this happened when production and use of chlorofluorocarbon gases, applied to aerosols, insulators, among others; and that they are mainly responsible for the thinning of this layer of the Earth’s atmosphere that is in the stratosphere.

But although there is progress, there is progress it challenges humanity must face in order to achieve the recovery of the ozone layer.

WMO assures that there is still a presence of these residues gases in the atmosphere and indicates that an increase in greenhouse gas emissions could slow down its recovery.

It is necessary to implement measures for its preservation, in addition product selection which confirm their low impact on the environment and with the change of some habits – such as the intelligent use of electricity or the adoption of renewable energy sources – which favor the environment.

According to World Bank data, CO2 emissions in Panama in 2021 amounted to 12,511 million tons, which represents 0.26% of global emissions. The sector that generates the most CO2 emissions in Panama is transport, which represents 44% of total emissions. This is followed by electricity production (30%), industry (16%) and agriculture (10%).
