The ending and credits scene of “The Marvels” explained: a Marvel comeback that could change everything

Of course, you should have seen “Captain Marvel” to have fun with “The Marvels” and have a basic understanding of the characters and their history up to this point. And to be able to do a little more with the new colleagues of Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), knowledge of the MCU series “WandaVision” and “Ms. Marvel” doesn’t hurt. Otherwise, the 33rd MCU film works quite independently, without really referencing the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, let alone the multiverse theme that is actually central to the current multiverse saga.

At least that is until This is the case shortly before the end, when another huge MCU detour is made with two teasers including surprise guest appearances, which will likely be important for the future of the comedy cinematic universe. We’d like to take a closer look at the ending of “The Marvels”…

This Is What Happens at the End of “The Marvels”

In the (victorious, of course) final battle against Kree villain Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton), she uses the combined power of the two quantum bonds to rip a hole in the space-time structure, no longer just a portal to open. to another place in her universe, but even to a parallel world. Apparently, this portal can only be closed from the other side using a huge amount of energy.

And so, energy absorber Monica Rambeau has the other two wonders charge her well to take on the task – but after the job is done, she ends up in the alternate universe. We find out what awaits them there a little later in the mid-credits scene (more on that below).

Kate Bishop and the Young Avengers

Before we return to Monica in the closing credits of “The Marvels,” the film itself ends with the obligatory sequel to the showdown. There is a brief mourning for Monica, but when Kamala’s family apparently moves into the Rambeaus’ old house after their apartment was destroyed, things pick up again.

The final ‘regular’ scene is actually much more exciting, essentially providing typical material for a classic MCU post-credits scene, but here it comes before the credits. We jump into a famous apartment in New York, where we meet Kate Bishop (known from the series “Hawkeye”) again (Hailee Steinfeld) gives. The professional archer (who apparently still cares for the one-eyed pizza dog Lucky) meets Kamala in her four walls, who emerges pregnant from the shadows and talks about how they are part of a bigger world – just like they once were Nick. Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in the very first MCU post-credits scene in Iron Man.

And just like Nick Fury Kamala wants to put together a new team of superheroes, but with younger members (something like the next generation of Avengers). This probably means that Marvel now actually wants to continue introducing the Young Avengers, known from the comics, into the MCUafter many potential young heroes have queued up for this over the years.

In addition to Kamala, Kate and Ant-Man’s daughter Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton), who was mentioned in ‘The Marvels’ scene, there would be dimensional traveler America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), known from ‘Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness”, which first features Iron Man successor Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne), who appeared in “Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever”, is the grandson (Elijah Richardson) of Captain America predecessor Isaiah Bradley from “ Both The Falcon And The Winter Soldier,” who becomes a patriot in the comics, as Scarlet Witch/Vision offspring Wiccan (Julian Hilliard) and Speed (Jett Klyne) are possible candidates for the team. And given his young age, Spider-Man (Tom Holland) would certainly be considered for the Young Avengers.

Kamala would therefore have plenty of options to draw from for the new squad, although it is still unclear whether she is doing the recruitment herself or is actually authorized by Fury (or someone else). At least we’re now a little closer to the formation of the Young Avengers, even though Marvel Studios is currently rumored to be toying with bringing out the old Avengers guard again to reignite interest in the somewhat stumbling MCU . .

Mid-credit scene: New Captain Marvel variant?

No matter how promising the possibilities of Young Avengers are with charm stallion Ms. Marvel leading the charge, the mid-credits scene of “The Marvels” (i.e. the scene that takes place after the animated credits but before the conventional credits) will likely be credits coming up. ) to add even more excitement. As mentioned above, here we get a small taste of the world Monica Rambeau found herself in.

When Monica wakes up in a hospital bed, she is initially overjoyed to find her mother Maria (Lashana Lynch) seen, who died of cancer in her world. However, this is common a variant of her motherwho apparently has no daughter in this universe and therefore does not recognize Monica.

Instead, Maria seems to be the Captain Marvel of this world (similar to the Illuminati scene in “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness”), which is evident not least from her costume, which is most reminiscent of Captain Marvel’s so-called Binary outfit from the Marvel comics. She may also have been the one who saved Monica from space.

Mid-credit scene: Beast and the X-Men

However, the real surprise only comes when someone enters the room again and takes care of the newcomer in his universe as a doctor. Because this is what matters X-Men member Beast, aka Dr. Hank McCoy, as he once did in “X-Men 3: The Last Stand” And “X-Men: The future is over” by “Frasier” star Kelsey Grammer is embodied.

The scene doesn’t resolve whether this is actually exactly that Beast incarnation or some other variant. In addition to its appearance, the setting features a familiar X-Men door, the mention of X-Men leader Charles Xavier, and the echo of the music themes from ‘X-Men 2’ and ‘Future is Past’. .

Either way, this unexpected Marvel comeback is likely providing a new piece of the puzzle on how to introduce the popular mutants into the MCU, bringing a whole new dynamic to the comic universe. So you’re probably not starting from scratch with completely new X-Men incarnations, but rather somehow through the multiverse Handing over the baton of former Marvel heroes.

This was already indicated by the (fatal) guest appearance of a Professor X variant (Patrick Stewart) in “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness”. However, this could be done even more extensively in “Deadpool 3,” where, as we know, Hugh Jackman not only returns as Wolverine, but he also presumably travels across the multiverse alongside the titular antihero (Ryan Reynolds). , running into many old X-Men acquaintances.

At the same time, a new mutant watch is already emerging, in which Kamala Khan could once again become a key figure. In spite of theMs. MarvelAs we learned, Kamala is apparently also a mutant.

Is there a post-credits scene on The Marvels?

After this big X-Men surprise in the mid-credits scene, any post-credits scene can only disappoint. Apparently the people behind ‘The Marvels’ felt the same way made the new MCU spectacular one of the few films in the series not to have a post-credits scene. At the end you only hear a few characteristic Flerken sounds, which you have already enjoyed extensively in the film itself. So it’s not really worth staying put.

The miracles“ has been in German cinemas since November 8, 2023.
