Yesterday the grand tasting of the new 2021 Bordeaux vintage took place at the Nobel Hotel Dolder in Zurich. The event was organized by the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux, which consists of 131 chateaux of Bordeaux’s most important names. Participating guests were even more excited about the wines.

Unlike the warmer, drier vintages of 2018, 2019 and 2020, the Bordeaux weather of the 2021 vintage was a bit more mixed. Vineyarders were plagued by spring frosts, hail, and heavy summer showers, among other things. But a relatively dry autumn again brought some relief.

This is how Bordeaux 2021 shows itself in glass

Freshness and elegance flowed like what countless Bordeaux wines have in common. Alcohol levels generally ranged from 13 to 14 percent and therefore tended to be slightly lower than previous vintages. Surprisingly, the tannins appeared to be mostly ripe and still integrated surprisingly well into the young wines. Most wines should be drinkable early.

In the low price segment, Châteaux Chasse-Spleen, Phélan Ségur and Gloria made a good impression. Margaux fans will get their money’s worth with the elegant wines of Château Giscours and Brane-Cantenac. If you have a bigger wallet, the classic and opulent Château Lynch Pages from the Pauillac appellation is an excellent choice.
