Sports psychologist Jan Rauch explains: Do we train better when we listen to music?

Do you automatically perform at your best when the right sound hits your ears? Unfortunately, it’s not that simple.

He broke a world record with the right music: Former Ethiopian long-distance runner Haile Gebrselassie (50) says he did exactly that in the 1990s and early 2000s. He broke some of the 27 world records he set in medium and long distances with the song “Scatman” in his ears. He said this in an interview with the British Guardian newspaper in 2013. The fast beat of the song matched her ideal running rhythm perfectly. And he encouraged him firmly.

According to Jan Rauch (48), there is no doubt that music can have a positive impact on our athletic performance. The sports psychologist at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences says: “The right music motivates us. And the right rhythm can make us run faster.” But the real question is always how amateur athletes find the right music for themselves.

Rauch says it’s important to listen to the music you consciously choose while running. Because: “Music should have a morale-lifting effect and trigger positive emotions. “Anything from Beethoven to the Beatles is possible, depending on your preference.” Many people find it helpful to look forward to listening to certain songs or playlists while running in the woods. Songs that you particularly enjoy and only listen to while running.

Music as pacesetter and structural aid

Besides motivation, music has another central effect during training: “Music can be an important tempo generator, peaking our performance with consistent beats.” Songs with a clear rhythm are ideal. According to Rauch, this makes it easier for us to stay in a given rhythm without overthinking. In these cases, Rauch describes music as a structural aid in education.

Rauch says the tempo of the song also plays a role. The general rule that a song with a rate of 120 to 160 bpm (“beats per minute”) is ideal has been scientifically proven. “But finding the right song or playlist requires patience,” says Rauch. The exact stride frequency and movement sequences vary between people, even if they run at exactly the same speed. Joggers may need to search for the right sound for a while and try different songs until they find the sound that suits them.

Beware of wrongly chosen music

In general, well-chosen music has a positive impact on workout performance, says Rauch. However: “An incorrectly chosen song can worsen performance in extreme cases.” Then you run at the wrong pace and run the risk of ignoring your own running rhythm. This causes the muscles to quickly become acidic. «Acidity is manifested by heaviness in the legs and a strong burning sensation in the muscles. “This is neither motivating nor performance-enhancing.”

Advert
Running training should be done without music in your ears if it is related to (re)building muscles or a rehabilitation plan.

Rauch says music while running can also be counterproductive when the workout involves executing specific sequences of movements—for example, during training as part of rehabilitation or to strengthen specific muscles. “In these situations, it is important to concentrate fully on the movements and not be distracted by the music.”
