Tips against November blues: Bad weather but still a good mood

Whatever helps against bad mood: flowers and colors in the house. For example, you can decorate the dining or living room table with autumn flowers and ornaments.
Corine Turrini Flury

Wet, cold and cloudy November days are difficult for many people. Changing lighting conditions not only make days dreary, they also affect mood and well-being. Lack of motivation, concentration problems and fatigue may occur more frequently.

The sleep-promoting hormone melatonin is responsible for this. As is usual in winter months, when light is low, melatonin release takes longer than in summer months and therefore performance decreases. Additionally, due to lack of sunlight, the body is also deficient in the light-dependent messenger serotonin, which has a mood-improving effect.

Serotonin is also found in chocolate, grapes, pineapple and nuts. This doesn’t mean you should stuff yourself with chocolates to lighten your mood a bit. But on rainy weekends or cloudy evenings, it wouldn’t hurt to treat yourself to a cup of hot chocolate in your favorite mug.

use daylight

It also makes sense to use the limited amount of available daylight. Therefore, in the morning, open the blinds on time and open the curtains. You still don’t need to get out of bed right away, but you can make yourself comfortable in bed by reading a book on your free days.

Make sure there is enough fresh air

It is also important that the apartment is well ventilated during the cold months. On the one hand, this can prevent the formation of mold in living spaces and, above all, is important for health. It’s even better to exercise in the fresh air, stimulating circulation and serotonin production, rather than simply ventilating the interior. Even if the sky is cloudy, the lighting conditions are much more intense than any room lighting, and with the right clothing and perhaps your favorite person by your side, a walk in the dreary November can be beautiful.

Make your home comfortable

And since life is now being lived more at home, it is even more valuable to make the house or apartment truly comfortable again. Pack cozy blankets and soft decorative pillows to make your four walls feel truly cozy again. A colorful autumn bouquet on the table in the living room and lighting candles and lanterns in the evening will lift your spirits even in November. A fragrant bubble bath can also provide moments of happiness. This applies: On cloudy days, indulge more in things that make you happy.
