Undisputed: Ticino is always worth seeing. Even if you have to wait, the journey on Gotthard is always worth it. The Mediterranean air around Locarno TI and Ascona TI exudes a unique holiday feeling, the squares invite you to linger and the fresh gelatins are pure pleasure. But much more interesting for outdoor sports enthusiasts are the numerous deserted Ticino valleys and mountain areas in Leventina; There are still very few visitors here and you can go climbing, hiking and cycling here.
For many people traveling to Ticino, Ambri Piotta is worth the most major rest stop, and ice hockey fans find their way here in the winter too. But there is definitely much more to this area that makes it attractive. From here, anyone who dares to venture down one of the narrow paths will be rewarded with plenty of untouched nature. One of these gems is the Campolungo region around Lake Tremorgio. The cable car runs from Rodi to the lake until mid-October. Many great walks start from here, such as Capanna Leit or the high road to Airolo. The climb can be done from Ambri without a train, but it is long and can alternatively be done by bike. The climb from Piotta TI on the north side of the valley to Lago Ritóm and Capanna Cadagno, the same name as the nearby smaller lakes Lago di Tom and Lago Cadagno, is slightly shorter but extremely steep. A real cycling highlight!
Other outdoor activities in Leventina include multi-rope classics such as the Spigolo route and the amazing slab climb above Faido TI. They are easily accessible and generally warm enough for climbing adventures in November compared to the northern side of the Alps. Of course, it is not possible to completely avoid the noise of the highway, but the time saved thanks to short-distance approaches in autumn is valuable. And last but not least, the Rheinwaldhorn deserves to be called the highest peak in Ticino. Even if there is a lot of snow higher up, climbing Capanna Quarnei is always worthwhile and offers spectacular views of the Malvaglia Valley. The hut is not catered in autumn/winter but is open for overnight stays.
Travel information
You can reach it by car or public transport via the Gotthard tunnel. There is a direct train connection every hour from Zurich main station to Ambri-Piotta TI (two hour journey).
If you don’t want to just spend the night in mountain huts, you’ll find a variety of accommodation options in the valley. Insider tips include Airolo’s Bed&Bike Tremola San Gottardo or BnB Casa Celio Ambri.
