A new ‘Star Wars’ movie is scheduled to hit theaters in May 2026 – but which one? Anyone who recently expected it to be Dave Filoni’s turn to culminate the events of his series like ‘The Mandalorian’ and ‘Ahsoka’ in his already announced film may have been disappointed.
Because there are many indications that a film set after the events of ‘Star Wars 9’ will be released first, in which Rey (Daisy Ridley) wants to rebuild the Jedi Order. Due to its timing within the “Star Wars” timeline, the project is often referred to as “Star Wars 10.” But it is and remains not an official title.
For a long time, this seemed like the project that would appear first. At times there were even rumors that filming would begin in April 2024. It probably won’t happen anytime soon, but Filming will begin later in 2024 – in time for a May 2026 theatrical release – still seems like a very viable option. This is especially true if the new information is true.
The usually well-informed insiders of now report that screenwriter Steven Knight (“Deadly Promises – Eastern Promises,” “Peaky Blinders,” “Spencer”) will soon submit his script. This was actually planned for the spring, but was canceled due to the screenwriters’ strike in Hollywood. The new deadline is around the end of October/Thanksgiving (the festival is at the end of November). The submission will take place these days or in the coming weeks.
This gives Lucasfilm the opportunity to use the period before Christmas to review the script, take notes and prepare for filming under the direction of director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (“Ms. Marvel”) – all provided, of course, that it script is well received.
What is the title of Star Wars 10? There is currently a rumor circulating
Recently, there was a rumor that the upcoming “Star Wars” movie would be titled “Star Wars: A New Beginning.” According to the insiders, this is a false report. Lucasfilm has not yet decided on the title.
The focus is on developing the right story for the film. We’ll think about a title later. It is of course possible that ‘A New Beginning’ will end up on a list of possible titles (or is already there).
What’s next for “Star Wars” in theaters? Many exciting projects
While the focus has recently been on the ‘Star Wars’ series on Disney+, there will soon be a lot more happening in cinemas. Disney and Lucasfilm have not only announced a theatrical release for May 2026, but also another six months later for December 2026 and a third for December 2027.
A total of three projects were specifically announced. In addition to ‘Star Wars 10’ and the Filoni project, there is also a film by James Mangold (‘Logan’) about the beginnings of the Jedi. But these three projects don’t necessarily have to fill these three start dates. The likes of “Thor 3” director Taika Waititi are developing a “Star Wars” film with “1917” author Krysty Wilson-Cairns that could fill one of these slots. And “Deadpool 3” director Shawn Levy is also working on a “Star Wars” project that will be a little different…
