Over hill and dale: Five easy routes for trail runners

Anyone planning a trip to the mountains in Switzerland is spoiled for choice. Whether inspired to hike with the family or suitable trail running routes, Blick and Ochsner Sport’s 26 Peaks hiking challenge has something for all mountain fans. You can take part in the walking campaign until October 31st and discover 26 walks in 26 cantons. Here Blick offers five easy trail running routes from 26 peaks:

The 16.2 kilometer long Aargausud high trail, ideal for trail running, starts in Reinach in the south of the canton of Aargau. On the way, you climb 532 meters and descend to 540 meters. The route initially heads north to Homberg. The panorama from the observation tower there is especially beautiful. If you want to take a break, there is also the Homberg restaurant nearby. The rest of the route leads via Wandflue to Obersädel AG, Dürrenäsch AG, via Höi to Siebe Zwingstei and Liebegg Castle, where the witch museum is located. Various hiking trails eventually end in Teufenthal AG.

If you are careful during this short trail run in Basel, you will discover 24 colorful works of art by German sculptor Tobias Rehberger (57). Ideal for beginners in trail running, the 5-kilometer-long Rehberger Trail connects two museums: The starting point of this special route is the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen BS, while the destination is the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany. On the way, you climb 55 meters and descend 59 meters and at the same time pass through nature.

This hiking trail in the canton of Geneva starts and ends in Choulex and leads picturesquely through various towns, wine-growing areas and the Marais de Sionnet nature reserve. When the weather is nice, the view of Mont Blanc from the Choulex winery is also worth seeing. The route, which is 12.8 kilometers long in total, has 166 meters of ascents and descents, making it suitable for trail running beginners as well. If you need a break every once in a while, you can go to one of the restaurants along the way, for example Restaurant Cheval Blanc in Meinier GE or Auberge de Coronne in Jussy GE.

This trail requires some conditioning: The La faux d’Enson hiking route in the canton of Jura is 16.1 kilometers long. There are 478 meters of ascent and 599 meters of descent. The starting point is Damvant JU and part of the route runs along the French border. It’s also worth climbing the 39 steps of the observation tower at Faux d’Enson, because from there you have a view stretching all the way to the Bernese Alps, depending on the weather. The route then continues towards Chevenez JU through pastures and forests, and there are several restaurants along the way for you to refresh yourself.

This route, which is only 4.6 kilometers long and has 350 meters of descent and ascent, is ideal not only for walking but also for trail running. The starting point and destination is the mountain station Niedermachen NW, which can be reached by cable car or on foot. You go behind Niedermachen-Chulm via Alp Tritt. There is a steep incline in some parts of the foothill next to the hiking trail, so it is especially important to tread safely here. The panorama is even more magnificent. If you still have energy on the way back, you can run or walk to the Hundschopf viewpoint. From here you can enjoy the view of Lake Uri and the surrounding mountains.
