Belize wins the Solutions for the Future 2023 program

The SMARTZ project (Smart stick and glasses) took first place in the Solve for Tomorrow 2023 program.

The grand finale in the regional edition of the program was performed by students Alair Miracle Marin, Amber Wright, Irian Maree Jones, Osvani Magañaled by Professor Abraham Flowers of Palloti High School, representing Belize.

This decision was extremely difficult for the assessors considering that two more finalist projectswho defended the colors of Ecuador and Venezuela, also stood out.

School boys Fiscomisional Calasanz Educational Unit (Ecuador) and Liceo de Talento Deportivo Guaiqueríes (Venezuela), earned their place in this year’s exciting final due to the high marks of the jury in the semi-final held in September.

This 2023, the winning team of the Virtual Community was Educational Unit Calasanz Fiscomisional, representatives of Ecuador. This project is a playful and educational method for the school population diagnosed with Down syndrome. Asperger’s disease, autism and ADHD, among other cognitive obligations.

On the other hand, the students of Altagracia Iglesias de Lora Polytechnic, who are part of the team from the Dominican Republic, received special recognition from the Samsung community, thanks to their work on a project to create a hydroelectric system that produces clean and renewable energy, called HIDROSUNG.

SMARTZ is a smart device that can used by people with visual impairments to move easily and avoid accidents while moving and performing their daily tasks. It is a resource that also aims to foster self-esteem and social integration.

The team is trying to find a solution to a public health problem in Belize, where more than 2,600 cases of visually impaired people are registered each year. This was the main reason that motivated the students to develop this technological project.

Presentations of the three finalist initiatives, assessment by the members of the jury, and the happy closing of the program took place in Panama City, this October 26.

With poise, enthusiasm and great spirit, the finalists spoke about attributes of your initiativesa moment that served to confirm the value of their approaches and understand why they were the top three projects in the Samsung Electronics Future Solutions 2023 edition.

A qualified jury of this final stage were made up of representatives of various institutions related to educational workscientific, governmental, technological and social countries and regions, along with Samsung.

This educational program “is an excellent complement to the education that young people receive in classrooms, while promoting the entrepreneurship of many of them who have managed to develop and realize their projects”, said Maruja Gorday de Villalobos, Minister of Education of Panama..
