‘Five Nights At Freddy’s’ on track for a record: are we expecting one of the biggest horror hits of the year?

On October 26, 2023, “Five Nights At Freddy’s,” a horror film based on a highly popular video game series, was released in theaters. And even though the trade press has not been very enthusiastic about the animated killing machines so far – the FILMSTARTS review only gave it a paltry 2 out of 5 possible stars – this does not change the fact that the horror film is developing into a real blockbuster be able to.

Current projections say the shocker will likely gross at least $50 million in the US alone – and these are the conservative estimates. With a production cost of around $25 million, it’s a fantastic return that could even make “Five Nights At Freddy’s” the most successful start of any film during the pre-Halloween weekend in the US. This title was previously held by 2011’s “Puss in Boots,” which grossed $34 million at the box office at the time. A result that could easily be pulverized by “Five Nights At Freddy’s” for the time being.

These estimates are particularly impressive because the film will also be released in the US on the Peacock streaming service at the same time as its theatrical release.. And whatever the reviews say, it’s nice to see that cinema, so battered in recent years, still seems to have an appeal, even for the younger generations.

Will ‘Five Nights At Freddy’s’ be the most successful horror film of the year?

With this opening, “Five Nights At Freddy’s” could also become the most successful horror release of the year in North America. “Scream VI” ($44.4 million), “The Nun 2” ($32 million), “M3GAN” ($30 million) and “The Exorcist: Confession” ($26.4 million) are currently in the lead here the first place. As a logical consequence of its likely top start at the box office, the film obviously has a good chance of becoming the most successful horror hit of the year – even if the sometimes scathing reviews could still prove to be a stumbling block. This spot is currently defended by the ecclesiastical shocker “The Nun II” with a worldwide gross of $263.5 million.
