For about a decade, electricity prices for homes in Switzerland averaged around 20 cents per kilowatt-hour. Then came the war in Ukraine, the difficulty in energy supply and, as a result, a huge increase in electricity prices for 2023. In 2024, tariffs will increase significantly again, reaching 32.1 cents per kilowatt-hour. The average electricity bill for a private household is expected to rise by 200 francs next year.
We all need to use less electricity for the sake of our wallets and the environment. Smart technology in the smart home offers interesting possibilities. In new buildings this is usually taken into account at the planning stage, but existing houses and flats can also be renovated.
It is especially important to use smart home components for savings. Although they require electricity themselves, they use significantly less energy than other smart home items like video surveillance or smart speakers.
These include, for example, smart thermostats for intelligent heating control. They can be controlled together with a control center or an app so you can heat individual rooms based on your user behavior. Smart thermostats replace the old rotary controls on radiators and can also be used with underfloor heating.
Another big energy consumer in the home is lighting. Here, too, you can save electricity with smart home solutions. For example, light sources can be controlled together with motion detectors so they only activate when someone is present. You can schedule presence routines using an app, or the system will adapt to the time of day, dimming the lights or turning them off completely.
An important element here is smart sockets, also known as smart sockets. It provides great convenience thanks to the remote control option via smartphone, tablet or voice control. They are used as adapters between sockets and wired devices. On the one hand, the smart plug can be used to measure the power consumption of the connected device, and on the other hand, the power supply can be regulated or interrupted. Using the app, you can also disconnect power from devices such as televisions or computers that would otherwise continue to consume electricity in standby mode. You can also operate various smart plugs via voice control with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.
Individual electrical appliances in the home, such as new refrigerators, are already smart today. They notify you via your smartphone if the door doesn’t close properly, recognize food and recommend a suitable storage temperature, or have an eco mode for long absences; Of course, this mode can also be adjusted remotely via the application.
