As you are always used to, Thursday is cinema day. This week a number of promising films will appear in German cinemas. These include, for example, the video game adaptation “Five Nights At Freddy’s”, which was announced almost a decade ago by the horror study Blumhouse (“Get Out”).
But if “Five Nights At Freddy’s” doesn’t appeal to you, there are two pretty attractive alternatives for you: David Fincher’s thriller “The murderer” like “One for the road“ with Frederick Lau and Nora Tschirner. So if you’re not really into horror movies, you at least have the option of watching a bone-chilling thriller or a life-affirming alcoholism comedy.
“Five Nights at Freddy’s”
After “Willy’s Wonderland” with Nicolas Cage was already loosely based on “Five Nights At Freddy’s”, you can now expect a direct adaptation of the successful video game. In it, ‘The Hunger Games’ star Josh Hutcherson, as a night watchman, has to deal with animatronic animal mascots that come to life in a pizzeria that has been closed for years. Also participating are “Scream” icon Matthew Lillard and Elizabeth Lail, best known for the Netflix series “You.”
It’s just a shame the movie isn’t worth it. In the official FILMSTARTS review, “Five Nights At Freddy’s” received a disappointing 2 out of 5 possible stars. Our author Sidney Schering comes to the following conclusion: “What has been a long time coming is finally done: after years of development, the video game cult ‘Five Nights At Freddy’s’ has finally hit the big screen – but it will hardly cause as much of a stir there as it has in the gaming world.”
“The murderer”
With ‘The Killer’, ‘Fight Club’ and ‘Seven’, maker David Fincher delivers his new film (which is also available with a Netflix subscription from November 10). After ‘Mank’, which generated somewhat mixed reactions, the master director is back with classic genre material in which Michael Fassbender makes his film comeback four years after ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ as a nameless contract killer.
We were able to see the film at this year’s Venice Film Festival and were absolutely thrilled. In the conclusion of his 4.5-star review, our author Björn Becher writes: “Contently, ‘The Killer’ may have nothing more to offer than a simple B-movie. But that’s not the point of this excellent Netflix original: with stirring sound, top-notch visuals and incredibly precise editing, David Fincher continually subverts expectations while simultaneously resembling his great role models (especially Jean-Pierre Melville). tribute.”
“One for the road”
For our initiative “German cinema is (still) great!” Every month we choose a German film that we particularly liked, inspired or fascinated, to editorially accompany the cinema release – regardless of its size – like a major Hollywood blockbuster. And this month the choice fell on ‘One For The Road’ by Markus Goller.
We can also highly recommend the drunken comedy starring Frederick Lau and Nora Tschirner. The conclusion of our editor-in-chief Christoph Petersen, who gave 4 out of 5 stars in his review, is as follows: “It’s just a pleasure to spend time with Frederick Lau – you can easily understand his friends who drink along and don’t intervene for a long time. But that’s exactly why it hurts so much when Mark finally loses his balance – and even crossing your fingers doesn’t help for long, because ‘One For The Road’ fortunately avoids overly simple answers to its protagonist’s alcohol problem.
