Although Roger Donaldson was never intended to rise to the top tier of Hollywood directors, he succeeded with films like the thriller “No Way Out,” the disaster blockbuster “Dante’s Peak” and the political chronicle “Thirteen Days”. “Leaving an impression as a gifted genre craftsman. One of his best-known works is the 1995 sci-fi horror ‘Species’, in which an alien who wants to mate causes fear and terror.
Haven’t seen the movie yet? Then you can watch it today, October 25 at 11:50 PM, on Cable 1. You shouldn’t expect a masterpiece, but the film does have one of the most disturbing sex scenes of all time! If you prefer to watch ‘Species’ in its original English version and/or without commercial breaks, you can switch to Amazon Prime Video, where the sci-fi horror is available for a fee.
That’s what “Kind” is about
An American research station receives a message from deep space containing an alien DNA structure and detailed instructions on how to link it to human genes. The result of the subsequent experiment is Sil, an external person who, however, develops quite quickly. Because initial behavioral studies reveal uncontrollable forces, the head of the research project (Ben Kingsley) decides to kill the alien.
A decision that little Sil (Michelle Williams) completely disagrees with. When the deadly gas is pumped into her cell, she uses her superhuman powers for the first time and escapes. A special unit is hot on their heels and realizes that Sil has quickly transformed into an attractive woman (Natasha Henstridge). Their goal is to find a male sexual partner to reproduce…
The sex scene is the highlight!
In the official FILMSTARTS review, “Species” only received a paltry 2 out of a possible 5 stars. Our author Jens Hamp complains that lead actress Natasha Henstridge simply does not have the acting qualities to carry the film. It also says:
“The hunt for the sexy beast is therefore too linear to be surprising and ends in boring clichés. While you can’t deny that alien hunting has some entertainment value despite its numerous flaws, the bottom line is that humanity has all too often been threatened by far more interesting dangers.
Although “Species” ultimately works more from a trash perspective, Roger Donaldson’s film at least manages to come up with one resonant scene. In it we witness how Sil, who is hungry for mating, wants to reproduce with a man and is surprised by the bounty hunter Preston (Michael Madson). Without further ado, Sil is forced to track down her partner during lovemaking – and in her luscious alien form, of course. A moment that will certainly be remembered, partly because of the well-known monster design by HR Giger (“Alien”).
